Does The Tape Make A Difference In The Olympics?

Crazy Olympian tape! Learn a little more about this tape so you can show off when your neighbors as the question about why the Olympic athletes wear strips of tape when they play.

Well, the Olympics are finally here. I, like many, spent parts of the weekend watching swimming, beach volleyball, gymnastics and all the many other sports. Have you noticed that many of the athletes are sporting various strips of tape on shoulders, knees, calf and other body parts? Have you been wondering what those strips are and why are so many athletes using them?

The strips are a treatment method called Kinesio taping. This tape and method was developed by Dr. Kenzo Kase nearly 25 years ago in Japan. It was developed in response to the limitations found with the use of rigid sports tapes that was then available for his clients. He spent years of research to develop a tape that has similarities to human skin and the elasticity that is similar to that of a muscle. He began using it on his patients and athletes.

The tape and its application is designed to support and stabilize muscles as well as help alleviate pain. The tape also helps lift the skin which also helps to decrease inflammation and increases circulation in the area. Depending on how the tape is applied, it can target different receptors in the nervous system that will either relax or facilitate a muscle’s function. Tape can be applied in hundreds of ways and has the ability to re-educate the neuromuscular system, enhance performance, prevent injury, and promote good circulation and healing.

The product is now available readily and is used by athletes of all skill levels to keep them on the field and functioning as efficiently as possible, even with an injury.
