Earth Day Events Abound In EG

Three different cleanups are planned — at Boesch Farm, the waterfront and Middle Road.

East Greenwich is celebrating Earth Day on Saturday with three different cleanups — a chance to spruce up our town while enjoying nature’s spring show.

The Town of East Greenwich, the Municipal Land Trust, and Pat's Pastured are holding a cleanup of that pastoral jewel known as . It takes place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at 830 South Road. Participants will do activities like field and brush clearing and planting bed and trail maintenance. Refreshments and supplies will be provided but feel free to bring your own tools like gloves, rakes, clippers and garbage bags.

In addition to the activities at Boesch Farm, the Town is also sponsoring roadway litter cleanups as part of Earth Day. Cleanups will take place Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Individuals and organizations interested in cleaning up in the vicinity of Middle and Howland Roads should meet at the parking lot at by 9 a.m. and those interested in cleaning up along the Waterfront should meet in the parking lot of by 9 a.m. We appreciate your support! If you have any questions or would like to sign your group up to help, please call the Planning Department at 401-886-8645. Maps of the two cleanup areas are attached as pdf documents, right.

Farther afield, the Environmental Protection Agency in Narragansett is hosting an Earth Day Festival on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine at the EPA’s Atlantic Ecology Division, across from the URI Bay Campus at 27 Tarzwell Drive, Narragansett. Under a theme of “Earth Day 2012: Working together for a greener planet,” the event will consist of interactive displays and informal workshops by local environmental organizations with the aim of increasing awareness of environmental issues and encouraging people to adopt sustainable practices in their everyday lives. Included will be exhibits by The Nature Conservancy, the Narragansett Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, Ocean State Aquaculture, the Narrow River Preservation Society, and the Appalachian Mountain Club. Activities will include a marine touch tank, facility tours featuring our new state-of-the-art green building modifications, demonstrations of field operations, and hands-on environmental crafts for kids.
