EG Teen Reunited With Cat Through Volunteer Work At Shelter

Maddie Eustis is a devoted animal lover. At 16, she's been the driving force behind the Adopt a Pet column that runs most Saturdays on the site and she volunteers regularly at the EG Animal Protection League. After her family's 19-year-old cat, Sydney, disappeared recently and the family decided it had wandered off to die someplace, Maddie was overjoyed to find it at the shelter on her volunteer day.

The cat was missing for 11 days when Maddie reported to work at the EG Animal Protection League shelter. As she was being introduced to the new animals who'd come in since Maddie was last in, she came upon a small cat that looked remarkably like Sydney. Then she reached into the cage and began to pet the cat. As soon as the cat lifted its head, she knew it was Sydney.

It turns out the cat had been picked up by the EG Animal Control Officer and spent three days at the North Kingstown Animal Hospital, as is the routine with strays. If they are not picked up by an owner in that time, the EGAPL will take the dog or cat. That's how Sydney ended up with the EGAPL and how Maddie then found her.
