Monday Essentials: 2015 Budget Talks Begin

Town Council-School Committee joint meeting: On the agenda is a discussion on the budget for fiscal year 2015. After that discussion, the Town Council meeting will continue with discussion of victualing and alcohol licenses, including the money owed by Norman’s. In addition, there will be a public hearing on a zone change for the Commons at Frenchtown Road. Here’s the agenda.  In Council Chambers at Town Hall. 7 p.m.

NECAP Community Forum: Community Forum: High-Stakes Standardized Testing is the third in a series of forums furthering the vigorous statewide debate over the use of the NECAP test as a high school graduation requirement and a broader national debate over high-stakes standardized testing. At Town Hall at 6:30 p.m. Panelists participating in the forum include: Rick Richards, former school & district accountability specialist, Rhode Island Department of Education; Ron Wolk, former vice president at Brown University; founder of Education Week; Anne Mulready, senior attorney, Rhode Island Disability Law Center, and Christopher Boie, math teacher East Greenwich High School. The Stone Ridge Candlelight Tour: The Stone Ridge Neighborhood Association is holding its annual Luminaria. This is a long-standing neighborhood tradition spanning over 25 years. The EG neighborhood provides an outdoor display for the holidays which includes our traditional holiday decorations and thousands of paper bag lanterns decorating curbs, driveways and walkways. Last year the neighborhood was lined with over 3,000 lit lanterns.  People from all over Rhode Island come to slowly drive through our neighborhood with headlights dimmed.

Directions: Follow Middle Road west of Route 2 to second right (Stone Ridge Drive). 5 to 9 p.m. Rain date Sunday.
