Monday Essentials: Vets Parade, Indoor Market

Your guide for life in East Greenwich this week.

On Monday …

Trash pickup delayed this week & NO recycle pickup: Because of the Veterans Day holiday, there is no trash pickup Monday and it is delayed one day for the rest of the week. This is an OFF week for recycles pickup. Yard waste, however, is being picked up every week this month. For more information, you can check out the Dept. of Public Works’ website here.

Veterans Day Parade: The annual parade steps off at 10 a.m. from Academy Field, marches up Spring Street, across Mawney Street, down First Avenue to the WWI war memorial for a wreath laying, and south on Main Street to final ceremonies in front of Town Hall.

Indoor farmers market: If you haven't been to East Greenwich's Indoor Winter Market, stop by this Veteran's Day as the "Arts & Farms" will be open for its usual weekly hours. Serving hot coffee and selling many of your grocery needs our lovely market will provide an nice little outing and shopping experience for this holiday. This week we will have a full Art Gallery on our first floor show room offering paintings, crafts, inspirational tees, jewelry and more. In the Farmers' hall we'll be listening to Samuel Adamo on cello once more, saying hello to our pet goats, Peaches-n-Cream and Trinity, and gathering the kids together for our weekly story hour from 5 to 6 p.m. by Wendy Fachon. From 3 to 6 p.m.

Town Council meeting: The Town Council will be recognizing fire and police promotions tonight, as well as honoring outgoing Police Chief Tom Coyle for 25 years of police service to the Town of East Greenwich and welcoming him to his new position as town manager. Note: The meeting takes place at SWIFT COMMUNITY CENTER. 7 p.m.

‘Feng Shui Your Life’ workshops: Best selling author Jayme Barrett is in East Greenwich Tuesday and Wednesday to present workshops – the Tuesday one called, appropriately, “Feng Shui Your Life,” and the Wednesday workshop is “Feng Shui For Beauty.” Both are from 7 to 9 p.m. You’ll learn more about Jayme and the workshops here. Dare to Educate Afghan Girls: Shabana Basij Rasikh, co-founder of the School of Leadership Afghanistan (SOLA), a boarding school that provides educational opportunities for a new generation of Afghan women, will speak at Salve Regina in Newport Wednesday evening. During college, Shabana founded HELA, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering Afghan women through education. She currently serves as the National Gender Mainstreaming Advisor at the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development in Kabul. 7 p.m. at the Bazarsky Lecture Hall. Free.

Municipal Court: The Town of East Greenwich holds Municipal Court once a month, at Town Hall starting at 5 p.m.

On Friday …

‘Hiring Our Heroes’ Job Fair: A military and veterans job fair will take place Friday at the Warwick National Guard Armory, 541 Airport Road, Warwick, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There’s an employment workshop planned for 9 a.m. that will focus on resume writing, tips for successfully navigating job fairs, military skill transition, and interviewing. Airband at EGHS: This is that hard-to-explain annual event that fosters unheard of degrees of cooperation from large groups of students in hopes that their grade will win first place. Always fun, usually raucous, it begins at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at the high school.
