Drink Beer, Run, Eat Hotdogs – 'Belly To Belly' Returns

"I say every year I'll never do it again, and then I do it," says one of the organizers, John Anderson, of the annual charity run.

For the past few years, Fat Belly's owner Scott Parker and friend John Anderson, have organized the Belly to Belly run – a charity "race" involving beer, hotdogs and, yes, running.  This year, they added another, more traditional, way to participate – a 5K run, no beer, no hotdogs. Needless to say, the participants of the 5K skewed younger. In fact, the top two finishers – William Foster and Jack McMullen – were both 10 years old. Third place finisher Pieter Snoeren? Well, according to Anderson, he was "much older" than the first two finishers! For the beer-and-hotdog race, the top finisher was Bob Jackman of Warwick. Second place went to Mark Howard of Warwick. Obituary: Frances Almonte Medeiros, 80

She was the beloved wife of Joseph Medeiros for 54 years. They operated the Monte Vista Restaurant in Seekonk for many years.

This obituary is courtesy of the Hill Funeral Home. Frances Almonte Medeiros, 80, died on Tuesday, May 21. She was the beloved wife of Joseph Medeiros for 54 years. Frances was the daughter of the late Angelo and Santina Villella Almonte. She graduated from St. Xavier High School, and Magna Cum Laude from Salve Regina College. For many years, she and her husband operated the Monte Vista Restaurant in Seekonk. Frances is also survived by daughter Sandra McCoy and her husband John McCoy, and four sons, Joseph Medeiros, Jr, Robert F. Medeiros and his wife Christine, Richard A. Medeiros, and Gilbert Medeiros and his wife Kimberly. She was the loving grandmother of Paige, James, Jessica and Jordan McCoy, Morgan, Michael and Anthony Medeiros. …

Should School Safety Plans Be Made Public?

The Rhode Island Senate passed two bills Tuesday to improve school safety, but they also make safety plans exempt from public records. What do you think? Should these plans be made public?

School safety is on everybody's mind, especially after the tragic shooting in Newtown, Conn., which was deemed the worst school shooting in recent U.S. history.  On Tuesday, the Rhode Island Senate passed two bills aimed at improving school safety.  The first bill, 2013-S 0800A, introduced by Sen. Hanna M. Gallo (D-Dist. 27, Cranston, West Warwick), directs the Commissioner for Elementary and Secondary Education to certify annually that all school safety plans and school emergency response plans have been reviewed and updated as appropriate. The second bill, 2013-S 0801A, sponsored by Senator Gallo, requires all schools to perform a school safety assessment in conjunction with local police, fire and school safety teams within 30 days of …

Police Log: Unmowed Lawns, Unpalatable Chicken

Monday, May 13 9:11 a.m. – Police arrested Christopher P. Reddy, 31, of Ledge Street in Providence, on a warrant after he was pulled over for speeding on Division Street. Routine checks turned up the active warrant. He was processed at the station and taken to 6th District Court in Providence. 3:45 p.m. – A Spring Street resident complained to police about the owner of the apartment house next door because he was not mowing the lawn in a timely manner. After making a complaint to the town, she received a letter from the property owner that said she should have contacted him before going to the town. The letter continued, “I can be a great neighbor and friend or i (sic) can be a nightmare.” The resident said she wanted the incident …

Town Tax Sale Takes Place Today

As of Wednesday at 4 p.m., there were 14 parcels on the sale list for unpaid property taxes and 3 parcels for unpaid sewer assessments.

Notices have been sent out and advertisements purchased in an effort to goad property owners to pay their outstanding property taxes or sewer assessment. Today the town gets serious: all properties in which taxes or assessments have not been paid through at least Dec. 1, 2012, will be sold at public auction. The auction takes place in Council Chambers at Town Hall at 1 p.m. As of 4 p.m. Wednesday, there were 14 parcels on the sale list for unpaid property taxes and 3 parcels for unpaid sewer assessments.  According to town Tax Assessor Janice Peixinho, winning bidders must pay off the back taxes or assessments in return for a lien on the property. Property owners have a year and one day to pay off their debt to the town, thereby clearing …
