The Odeum is looking for $60,000 to resume holding performances.

Meh. All it is is backslapping. The current leadership clearly are in it for the small-townRead More "glory" of it all (even Prosnitz is still involved when he should be writing the Odeum a check for $60,000). They had an "open" meeting recently and the one way people could find out about it was through a note posted outside the Odeum. Really? I mean could they be less self-serving? A friend of mine who works in the concert industry offered to volunteer his time to help with programming and was rebuffed three times by these folks because they clearly want to continue to run it (into the ground). I sent my friend an email about this earlier and he said he's ready to pitch in whenever there's another "regime change." It's a shame. $60,000 in the hole? Anyone previously associated with the Odeum should resign and a new team brought in by the town. It really is a disgrace as this COULD be a wonderful resource to add some culture to EG.
MrsJones August 7, 2013 at 06:40 pm
I think a successful Odeum would be fantastic for the town. I really do wonder how anyone canRead More expect different, i.e., better results with the same management. From what I understand, although the officers have changed, the board is relatively the same as it has been for years. I know I'd be more inclined to respond to the latest fundraising effort if there was new management.

I was an early donor and a buyer of a Odeum theater seat to memorialize my musician son who diedRead More tragically three years ago in New York. I believed in the mission of the theater and what it could contribute to the community of East Greenwich and beyond. I was a member of the board, but I became disturbed by the inept "leadership" and spoke out about it. Many of my fellow board members quit the board and have refused to return. They were all the best members of the board, with experience, knowledge, and money. There is currently no market for non-profit institutional mediocrity. I stuck it out with the board because I wanted to see the theater re-open and succeed. My 7 children disagreed with my decision. They loathe the mediocrity of the so-called "leadership" and said I was wasting my time with these people. Maybe I was, but I thought I could make it better and help it ultimately succeed. The board's dismissal of the board president two months ago for cause was a positive step in the right direction, but this person is still on the board. Not good. The community has spoken and they say they will NEVER support the Odeum with this person on the board or anywhere near the Odeum organization. Last Friday, the four people on the executive committee, all my friends (!), decided to request my resignation and did so by the personal method of email. Surprise! I am guessing they said: "If you are going to point out that we have not yet severed the cancerous growth on the Odeum that is preventing us from being successful, then YOU have to go. We don't like people telling us we are 'idiots'." {I may be paraphrasing a bit here, but that is what I believe they were really saying or surely wanted to tell me} Of course, that's not the whole story. The issue isn't money, it's the board. People WANT to donate and give money. But they don't like the people running the board -- the old guard. There is lots of money, TONS of money available, but not for this "management" group. As many others have pointed out here, they ALL need to go. The board needs a banker, a multi-millionaire business leader, a great non-profit leader, a high level media person, and a few other leaders of their respective field. No one on the current board meets any of these criteria. Adios, amigos! THE GOOD NEWS: There is, right now, more than $100,000 in gifts, donations, and grants sitting on the sidelines to support the Odeum, but which will not be given to the Odeum Corporation with its present board, as correctly pointed out by MrsJones, Jay Jones, DowntheHiller, Mutato, and other readers of the Patch. As previously explained in person and in writing to the Odeum board, no big money will EVER be contributed to the Odeum until two of three key issues are immediately resolved. ALL community, Family, and Corporate foundations are very aware of the management and board problems at the Odeum and will not accept or approve any new grants until these issues are addressed. For the general public, these issues will be explained in more detail in the ODEUM NEWS blog on patch.com/East Greenwich. Though I am no longer a board member, I STILL want the Odeum to succeed. We all do. As soon as the current board resigns en toto and moves on, then I and my family, plus more than a hundred other people and foundations will again donate money and time to the theater and support its re-birth and growth. The Odeum will rise again.
