Fire Destroys Potowomut Cottage [VIDEO]

It took place late Sunday afternoon on Wampanoag Road right across from the main entrance to Goddard Park.

A fire destroyed a cottage at 189 Wampanoag Road in Potowomut Sunday afternoon. No one was injured. The structure, which the owner said was not habitable, was not occupied at the time. “My mother saw the flames,” said Paul Alexander, who owns the cottage as well as a house on the property where he lives with his wife and parents. He estimated his mother saw the fire around 4 or 4:10 p.m. Alexander said he thought it was started by a cigarette butt dropped in dry leaves beside the structure, which was used for recreation. The post-and-beam building had been moved to the site more than 50 years earlier, he said, and it sat up on blocks. Alexander said the cottage used to be his “book barn” but the books were housed in a separate building …

Second Suspect Arrested In Frenchtown Break

A warrant for Bruce McKenzie went out yesterday and he was picked up in East Providence today.

East Greenwich police arrested Bruce McKenzie, 23, of Cranston for breaking and entering and conspiracy in connection with a break on Frenchtown Road Monday afternoon. A warrant for McKenzie went out yesterday after police arrested Trisha M. Newman of Central Falls for conspiracy to commit a breaking and entering. McKenzie was taken into custody by East Providence police Friday morning and turned over to East Greenwich. He was arraigned at Kent County District Court. On Monday, the young girl (police said only that she was below age 15) was in the house at the time of the break. The girl barricaded herself upstairs and called 911, keeping in phone contact with police throughout the event.

Chief Relates Details In Two Arrests

Hard work, clues and good luck help police to make arrests in both an attempted break in on Frenchtown Road and an armed robbery at Sunnybrook Farms, he says.

It was a terrifying few minutes for a girl in a house alone on Frenchtown Road Monday afternoon. East Greenwich Police Chief Tom Coyle told Town Council members Thursday night just what took place during both that aborted Frenchtown break Monday and an armed robbery at Sunnybrook Farm on Main Street Tuesday night. According to Coyle, when the doorbell rang at the house on Frenchtown Road west of Tillinghast, the girl (whose age has not been released except to say that she’s under 15) looked out. When she didn’t recognize the man at the door, she called her mother and hid in a bathroom. While on the phone with her daughter, the mother used another phone to call police. After no one answered the front door, the man walked around to the back…

Police Arrest Suspects In Both Monday Break In, Tuesday Robbery

An arrest warrant for a second suspect in the Frenchtown break has been issued.

Police have made arrests in two incidents that took place this week — a break in to an occupied house on Frenchtown Road Monday afternoon and an armed robbery at Sunnybrook Farms Tuesday night. Police arrested Samuel T. Lemont, 18, of Bayberry Lane, for the armed robbery of the Main Street convenience store. The robbery took place Tuesday evening at 9:33 p.m. Lemont allegedly held up the lone employee, departing with an unknown amount of money. The weapon — a semi-automatic handgun — was recovered, according to police. Lemont was arraigned Thursday in Kent County District Court on one count of first degree robbery. If convicted, he would face 10 years to life in prison. East Greenwich police also arrested Trisha M. Newman, 24, of Summer …

I also do have a solution. Close the bars, eg then negotiates with north kingstown to build a entertainment center over on the quonsett base. Where there isn't people having to live there, they can get as loud as they want, as drunk as they want an they can go park over there and get it on without the possibility of kids watching them do it. Could even build a strip mall and split the profits 50/…   more ›

Robbery Suspect Still At Large

Sunnybrook Farms owner says the robbery is first in 22 years of ownership.

East Greenwich Police Chief Tom Coyle said they are “working on a suspect” in the armed robbery Tuesday night of the Sunnybrook Farms convenience store on Main Street. The suspect, around 18 to 20 years old, held up a lone store clerk Tuesday around 9:30 p.m., according to police. On Wednesday, store owner Mike DiRaimo said he had not yet figured out how much was taken. DiRaimo said this was the first time in 22 years of ownership that a robbery — armed or otherwise — had taken place. “Once we caught some kids taking candy bars. That’s the extent of it,” he said. The clerk, he said, has worked at the store for eight years and did not recognize the man, who was captured on videotape by a surveillance camera. "Most of our customers are …

Girl Hides During Frenchtown Road Break

According to police, she barricaded herself in an upstairs room and called police.

A suspect broke into a house on Frenchtown Road west of Tillinghast Road late afternoon Monday and a young girl was in the house at the time, police said Monday night. The girl, who police said was under age 15, hid in an upstairs room and called 911. "She did an excellent job of keeping in touch with us," said Det. Lieutenant Jeremy Fague Monday night. She continued to update police throughout the encounter. By the time police arrived, however, the suspect was gone. The girl was not hurt. "We arrived on scene and the suspect wasn’t there and we started our investigation," Fague said. "The house was broken into." He refused to elaborate as to what, if anything, had been taken from the house or give the exact address. Police are treating …

I imagine many of us are thinking that since this is EG that it couldn't happen here. It should be a lesson to of us that we are never completely safe from something like this no matter where we live. I am really glad the girl was unharmed and didn't actually have to confront the person who broke into the house.   more ›
