The Kentish Guard of East Greenwich is a historic military unit that was founded prior to the American RevolutionMore in 1774. In 1843, the Kentish Guard Armory was built using a donation from the Rhode Island General Assembly.

In current times, the Kentish Guard performs ceremonial duties for the state of Rhode Island. Original 18th century field music can be heard when the Kentish Guard's own marching band, the Fife and Drum Corps, plays at public events such as the Memorial Day Parade.

The Varnum Continentals is an organization that honors the American Revolutionary Army and the ContinentalMore Regiments commanded by General James Mitchell Varnum. In 1913, the Varnum Continentals built the Armory that served as their headquarters and houses an extensive collection of military and naval artifacts.
