Playoffs begin Thursday at 7 p.m. at home on Carcieri Field.

The EGHS boy’s lacrosse team continued with aggressive offensive play and strong defense over the last two weeks of the regular season, kicked off by a 12-1 victory over Prout. The Avengers followed with a decisive 8-0 win over South Kingstown, followed by a 17-4 victory over Middletown played over two days due to rain and storm delays. The team wrapped up its regular season last Tuesday with a 13-0 shutout against Narragansett at home. At this point, the Avengers lead Division II at 13-0, followed closely by rival South Kingstown with an 11-2 record. The Newport woman, who lost part of her left leg in the Boston Marathon bombings, threw out the first pitch.

Yesterday was Rhode Island Day at Fenway Park and a special Rhode Islander threw out the first pitch. On her way from Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital to her Newport home, Heather Abbott stopped by Fenway Park and walked out to the pitcher's mound.  The last time she was at Fenway Park had been Monday, April 15, Patriot's Day. After she left the stadium, Abbott and friends went to the see the finish of the Boston Marathon on Boylston Street. She was caught in the second bombing and lost part of her left leg as a result of her injuries. Take Them All Out To The Ball Game: Opening Day In EG

Hundreds of kids and parents turn out for the annual EG rite of spring known as the Little League Opening Day parade.

There just something about little league opening day festivities that makes you think all is right in the world. Even with the array of alternative sports that are now played in the spring (around here, lacrosse and soccer), baseball remains a touchstone sport. So it was on Saturday. The weather was perfect as children, coaches and parents gathered at Academy Field for the annual Opening Day Parade. Kids ran around playing and mugging for the camera, parents sipped coffee and coaches checked rosters. Then the parade. Marchers went from Church Street down to Main Street to First Avenue, across 2nd Street to to Fifth Avenue, and down to Cragan Field, home of East Greenwich Little League. At Cragan, there were speechs for the adults and a …

Boys Volleyball Season Far Brighter So Far Than Last Year

If the 2012 season was the ultimate rebuilding year, 2013 is seeing the benefit.

When the EGHS Class of 2011 graduated, it took almost the entire Boys Volleyball team with it. Then-sophomore Patrick Wong was the only member left.  Not surprisingly, the 2012 season reflected that dearth of experience.  "Our record last year was 3-13. I had a relatively new team with one Varsity veteran. My starting varsity setter last year was a freshman," said coach Theresa Garno.  What a difference a year makes. After back-to-back wins this week – against Warwick Vets 3-0 and West Warwick 3-2 – the team is now 6-3.  "This season, I returned all athletes except one," said Garno. "This season, every varsity player but one is a veteran. Patrick Wong is a four-year varsity starter who plays left side and is crucial to both our defense …

Avenger Boy’s Lacrosse Team Leads Division II at Mid-Season

EG continues strong performance with 5-0 division record, 5-2 overall

The Avengers kicked off last week in a home game against the Division I North Kingstown Skippers. Consistent with their history of slow starts, EG had only three goals in the first half of the game, one from Colin Waitkun, followed by two from Captain Sam Feinberg. North Kingstown countered with six goals, two each from John Bishara and Steven Fallon, one each by Colin Vincent and Captain Aaron Binek. The third quarter saw three goals by the Avengers (Colin Bernier, Captain Matt Cruise, Ryan Trinque) and three from the Skippers (Fallon, Captain Kevin McDermott, Vincent).  The Avenger’s offense came to life in the fourth quarter with three unanswered goals by Ben Contreras, Feinberg, and Trinque leaving the score 9-9 as the clock ran out…
