Local Runners Turn Out For Bunny Hop's Second Year

Most among the top finishers were EGHS students or grads.

The weather wasn't exactly ideal for the East Greenwich Track Club's second Bunny Hop last Saturday, but runners and supporters turned out anyway.  The winner of the 5K race was East Greenwich High School student Ben Fazio, 17, a cross country and track standout, with a time of 16:25. The first female finisher was Emily McCaffery, 27, a EGHS alum, with a time of 19:45.  For the 1K Fun Run, the top finisher was Cole Middle Schooler Matt Sommer. Council, School Committee Start Budget Talks

December is a long way from June, when next year's budget is finalized at the Financial Town Meeting, but you've got to start somewhere.

Town Council and School Committee members sat down together Tuesday for the first time since the election brought two new members to the School Committee and everyone agreed that the spirit of collaboration that began two years ago and continued last year should be continued. It was the first of what both panels acknowledged would be numerous joint and independent sessions on the fiscal year 2013 budget, which will begin July 1, 2012. The School Committee, while an independent body, must live under the ultimate budget decisions of the Town Council, which by town charter must pass the budget. Schools Propose $34 Million '13 Budget

That’s $1.48 million – around 4 percent – over the current budget.

Superintendent Victor Mercurio presented a $34 million budget for fiscal year 2013 to the School Committee Tuesday night, $1.48 million – roughly 4.5 percent – higher than the 2012 budget. The increases, he said, came from a variety of sources, including contracted salary and benefits increases (around $1 million) and special education (around $460,000). The amount sought from the town, however, is at just over 4 percent, thanks to increases in revenue, including a projected in boost in state aid. Typically, the state aid number has been the last one to fall into line, but the state passed an education funding formula last year and according to that, East Greenwich is slated to receive $1.78 million from the state. I don't believe what I am hearing. Why is there always a huge rise in costs, it seems higher than the cost of living. In these extraordinary ecomomic times I believe the people who run the department should be limiting expenses, just as the citizens of East Greenwich and Rhode Island have to.You act like $ from the states is not money from us.
