5K Run In Memory Of OLM Alum, Hockey Standout Tom Cavanagh

"An event like a 5K is right up his alley, although he would probably joke that it should be on ice!" says Tom's dad, Joe Cavanagh.

Tom Cavanagh, who died two years ago at age 28, was the sort of hockey player and person who routinely reached out to the those less able to help them along. The scholarship fund at Our Lady of Mercy School in Tom's memory is a way he is able to keep reaching out, to help some lucky students as they pursue their academic goals. On Saturday, May 18, the Inaugural Thomas Cavanagh Scholarship Run will take place in and around downtown East Greenwich. As his father, Joe Cavanagh, said about his very athletic son – "An event like a 5K is right up his alley, although he would probably joke that it should be on ice!" Tom, the middle child of Joe and Carol's nine children, attended OLM School. He graduated from Toll Gate High School, Phillips …

NK Runners Finish First In 2nd Annual Turkey Trot

Eric Lonergan and Mary Najarian, both of North Kingstown, are the first man and woman to cross the finish line at the 5K Saturday in downtown East Greenwich.

It happened to be Mary Najarian's 23rd birthday Saturday and perhaps that gave the North Kingstown resident the extra push needed to finish the Hill and Harbour Turkey Trot 5K strong, since she captured first place for women with a time of 20:07. Eric Lonergan, 27, also of North Kingstown, took first place overall, with a winning time of 16:08. They were among the more than 500 participants in the 5K, with another 100-plus participating in the one-mile Fun Run. Temperatures were cool but dry, with a stiff wind in the open areas of the course, runners said.  The race was sponsored by the Main Street Association and the East Greenwich Lions Club and proceeds will benefit the EG Animal Protection League.  Ken Bell announced the start of the …

Steve Marra 5K Brings Out Runners, Lots of Love

The road race through the Hill & Harbour neighborhoods was a tribute to the late Steve Marra, who owned the Grille on Main.

After a very tough year for the many people who loved Steve Marra, the 5K run/walk Sunday, Oct. 21, was an opportunity to smile again. Marra, who died unexpectedly in August 2011, owned the Grille on Main, the now-closed Post Office Cafe, and several other restaurants around the state. His presence was particularly felt here in East Greenwich, where the Grille was an early anchor of the now-burgeoning dining scene on Main Street. Good friend Mike Ferruccio, an R.I. State Trooper, decided to organize a 5K race as a tribute to Steve and to fund a charitable foundation in Steve's name. On Sunday morning, Ferruccio was all smiles. "We're so thankful for this dedication to Steve," he said. "We could not have done this without our volunteers …

Two 5Ks On Horizon: Steve Marra Tribute, Turkey Trot

Run, EG, run! The Steve Marra race takes place Oct. 21; the 2nd Annual Turkey Trot on Nov. 24.

The EG Town Council Monday night approved the Steve Marra Foundation 5K Road Race to be held Sunday, Oct. 21. The race will start behind the Grille on Main and finish in front, on Main Street, and will honor Steve Marra, the restaurant's former owner, who died unexpectedly a year ago. State trooper Mike Ferruccio told the Council that in addition to honoring the memory of Steve Marra, who supported a number of charities during his life, it would also provide seed money for the nonprofit started by Steve's brother and sister in their brother's memory. "I was a close friend of Steve’s," said Ferruccio. "It's a tribute to him. He was a great guy." Council president Michael Isaacs praised the plan. "It's nice to see this foundation carry on …

Good Weather Boosts Bunny Hop 5K

The race/walk at Goddard Park to benefit the EG Track Club had close to 400 participants.

EG phys ed teacher and track coach Peter Dion was already making calculations in his head about improvements for next year, but participants in Saturday’s first-annual EG Track Club Bunny Hop 5K at Goddard Park seemed to be enjoying the event just fine. In fact, so many people participated — around 400, according to estimates — they didn’t have enough t-shirts for everyone. They only ordered 300 t-shirts, thinking that would be plenty. And maybe it would have been, if the weather had been cold and rainy. But Saturday was sunny, with temperatures in the 60s. Families came out in droves. The morning started with a 1-mile fun run, followed by an egg hunt. The 500 eggs were scooped up in less than two minutes. The main event featured many …
