EG Rotary Presents $62,000 Check to ALS-RI

Rotarian Dr. Judy Pratt receives ALS-RI Spirit of Lou Gehrig Award

The East Greenwich Rotary Club has added to their standing as the largest individual donor to ALS-RI with presentation of a check for $62,000 during the Association’s annual “Evening of Hope” celebration at the Newport Hyatt Regency. The latest check brings the club’s contribution to ALS-RI to just under $400,000 and tops the $55,000 presented last year.   The money is generated by the Scott Carlson Memorial Road Race held each April and has grown  substantially since generating $10,000 at the first race 12 years ago. Long-time race director Judy Pratt was honored by the Association with their “Spirit of Lou Gehrig Award”.  Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) impacted the New York Yankee baseball great at the height of his career and is …

No Rain, Plenty Of Runners, For ALS 5K

The annual run/walk at Goddard Park attracted nearly 700 participants.

The sun wasn't shining, but no one minded at Saturday's Scott Carlson/ALS 5K at Goddard Park. That's because rain had been in the forecast and many remembered last year's cold rain. Nearly 700 people registered by the start of the race. The top three finishers as well as the top female finisher were from Connecticut. The winner of the race was William Sanders, from Wethersfield, Conn., with a time of 15:04.4. Marie Davenport of Guilford, Conn., was the first female finisher, with a time of 17:07.2. "We had an awesome day," said race organizer Judy Pratt from EG Rotary. She said it was looking possible that they raised close to $60,000 for the ALS Association of Rhode Island. She lauded the "tons of volunteers" from EG High School Interact…

John Taylor Keeps On Rolling

He will be participating in Saturday's Scott Carlson/ALS 5K at Goddard Park.

On some days when John Taylor rolls up and down the streets of East Greenwich he posts a sign on the back of his wheelchair which reads: don’t push, I’m training for a race. He’s been in 16 races since getting involved in 5K events several years ago, and this spring he's has already participated in a run at the John Horjan elementary school in West Warwick as well as last weekend's EG Track Club Bunny Hop 5K. On April 21, he will be in the East Greenwich Rotary Club’s Scott Carlson Memorial Road Race at Goddard Park, which raises money for the Rhode Island ALS chapter, helping people with what is commonly know as Lou Gehrig’s disease. John says he will start first and finish last, which is ok with him since his goal is to better his …

EG's Unsung Heroes of 2011: Judy Pratt

The dentist who fights ALS

ALS isn’t something that comes up during office visits, but dentist Judy Pratt has made helping people with the disease a big part of her life. As chair of the Scott Carlson Memorial Road Race committee of the East Greenwich Rotary Club for the last six years, Pratt has boosted that event into the biggest single contributor to the Rhode Island ALS Association.   Last April's race saw the biggest turnout to date, and generated more than  $50,000 for ALS-RI.  That's what prompted reader Jodi Gladstone to nominate Pratt as one of EG's 2011 Unsung Heroes. "Very quietly and without publicity for herself, she works all year long to spearhead the ALS road race at Goddard Park in April," Gladstone wrote in an email. "She is tireless!" EG Rotary …
