From a teacher at East Greenwich High School: I had the opportunity to go with the Jazz Band to the 45th Annual Berklee College of Music High School Jazz Festival. East Greenwich was recognized on several fronts. Andrew Miner received two awards for his playing on the tenor saxophone – Judges Choice Award as outstanding member of the EGHS Jazz Band as well as a Superior Musician Award. The Jazz Band earned honorable mention in its category for ensemble play, 4th place out of 16 schools in their division. They also received an award for 35 years of participation. Mr. Carniaux and Mr. Mattera [Mr. Carniaux's predecessor] deserve a great deal of thanks for their time and commitment to music program in our community. While this would be …

Middletown takes advantage of two turnovers by East Greenwich in the second half to take the Division III Super Bowl 33-21.
EAST GREENWICH – Middletown capitalized on a pair of East Greenwich turnovers early in the second half to score 14 points and salt away a Division III Super Bowl victory, 33-21. The Islanders had a 19-7 lead with 1:28 left in the first half, but EG’s Andrew Miner ran a picture perfect two-minute, no huddle offense to score in about 60 seconds. The Avengers went into the break trailing 19-14 as a result. However, Middletown held the Avengers to a three-and-out on their initial possession of the second half. East Greenwich limited Middletown to six plays on their drive, but Alex Cleary couldn’t handle a punt, and the Islanders took over on EG’s 33-yard line. Shemar Vincent recovered for Middletown. It took Middletown seven plays, but …

EG Football team wins against Burrillville, 48 to 0.
The Avengers hit on all cylinders Friday night in their game against the Broncos. Although Burrillville seemed to come out with some steam at the start of the game, they were no match against Av’s superior defense and EG just kept scoring, ending the game with a 48-0 blowout. A few minutes before the end of the first quarter, EG’s Alex Cleary started off the scoring, with a running touchdown, followed by his successful extra point kick. The Av’s offense was explosive in the second quarter, with a running touchdown by Carney Crawford, followed by a short passing touchdown by Jeremy Streich. EG’s Alex Cleary intercepted a pass by Bronco quarterback Isaiah DeSilva, running in the ball for a 41-yard touchdown. EG wrapped up the half with a 60…

The essay written by the soon-to-be EGHS junior (and EG Patch blogger) is about his faith in teachers.
Al Ross tipped me off to it – Andrew Miner read his essay on the "This I Believe" segment on RI National Public Radio Tuesday. It's been a big summer for Andrew. Even now, he's in the Arctic (!) with Students on Ice. Now, the experience of breaking his leg during last fall's Homecoming game has provided material for an essay good enough to chosen to be read on the air. Not too shabby, Andrew! Click here for a link to Andrew reading his essay. To read Andrew's first blog post – A Tough Break – written just two days after he broke his leg, click here. To read one he wrote in May for the seniors as they graduated – My Hometown – click here.

Indeed - kudos to the former EGHS music teachers - Mr. Mattera and Mr. Ron Stabile - who was larger than life in his total respect and care for every individual student!
