NK Sweeps EG, Moves Into Baseball Finals

The first game, Friday night, was a shutout; the second game, Saturday, NK won 8-4.

The North Kingstown Skippers earned a berth in the Division I Baseball finals yesterday, beating East Greenwich 7-4. They won the first semifinal game against the Avengers 8-0. NK will meet either Bishop Hendriken or Johnston in the finals. Those teams play a deciding third game Sunday. The Skippers dominated game one, with a strong performance by pitcher Dominic Grillo, a junior, who gave up only two hits. They got on the scoreboard with three runs the bottom of the second inning and didn't look back. In game two on Saturday, again the Skippers jumped to an early 4-0 lead by the third inning. EG's David Hopkins doubled in the first for 2 runs but a 3-run homer by NK's Chris Hess in the sixth put the Skippers out of range for the Avengers…

Avengers Capture DII State Championship For Third Straight Year

The EG Boys Lacrosse team bests SK 11-2 in Sunday's final at Brown's Stevenson Field.

For a team with a reputation for slow starts, the Avengers seemed determined to not let that happen Sunday, when they played for their third-straight Division II state championship against the South Kingstown Rebels. The first quarter ended with EG up 6-0. By the half, they were up 9-0. Scoring slowed in the second half, but the Avengers still came away with a decisive 11-2 victory over the Rebels. Colin Waitkun, who scored 4 goals in the game, including 3 in the first quarter, was named most outstanding player. It was a sweet end to a sweet season. The Avengers were 15-2 coming into the game, but 15-0 in division play. South Kingstown came into the final with a 13-3 record. EG beat SK in both regular season match ups. The 15 seniors on …

EGHS Boys Lacrosse Heads To 3rd Consecutive Division II Finals

A decisive 13-4 semifinal win over Wheeler gives the Avengers the state championship berth Sunday at 3 p.m. at Brown.

The Wheeler Warriors kicked off their Division II semifinal lacrosse playoff bid against EG Wednesday with a goal by Clement Titsworth just minutes into the game. That was the only lead the Warriors had, however, as the Avengers answered with four goals of their own in the first quarter and a 13-4 score overall. The win gives the Avengers a chance at a third-consecutive D II state championship. EG will take on South Kingstown Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Brown University. Those four goals in the first quarter were two by Colin Bernier and one each by Captain Sam Feinberg and Ryan Trinque. The second quarter continued in the same fashion, kicked off by another Wheeler goal by Titsworthjust, with EG responding quickly with successful points from…

Avengers Boys Advance to DII Lacrosse Semifinals

EG to play Wheeler on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Carcieri Field; Girls fall to Bay View in the quarterfinals.

EG lacrosse fans kicked off last Thursday’s playoffs cheering on the Lady Avengers in their Division I quarterfinal bid against Bay View Academy.  Avenger Carolyn Cruise made a successful shot on goal to bring the game to a tie with just over a minute left in the game. A tough call against EG and another goal by Bay View were just enough to give Bay View a 12-11 win over the Avengers. The EGHS boy’s team then took the field under cloudy skies for their Division II quarterfinal game against the Prout Crusaders. Although EG had two wins against Prout during the regular season, the Avengers experienced their typical slow start. Fans had to wait nearly six minutes into the first quarter for EG to score, with offensive pressure building …

Avenger Boy’s Lacrosse Team Leads Division II at Mid-Season

EG continues strong performance with 5-0 division record, 5-2 overall

The Avengers kicked off last week in a home game against the Division I North Kingstown Skippers. Consistent with their history of slow starts, EG had only three goals in the first half of the game, one from Colin Waitkun, followed by two from Captain Sam Feinberg. North Kingstown countered with six goals, two each from John Bishara and Steven Fallon, one each by Colin Vincent and Captain Aaron Binek. The third quarter saw three goals by the Avengers (Colin Bernier, Captain Matt Cruise, Ryan Trinque) and three from the Skippers (Fallon, Captain Kevin McDermott, Vincent).  The Avenger’s offense came to life in the fourth quarter with three unanswered goals by Ben Contreras, Feinberg, and Trinque leaving the score 9-9 as the clock ran out…

EG Boys Fall To N. Smithfield, 66-55, In D III Hoops Final

The undefeated Northmen led the game throughout.

In the end, North Smithfield would not be denied a perfect season, beating East Greenwich in the Division III Boys Basketball final 66-55, and improving their unbeaten streak to 24 games. Senior Cody L'Heureux scored 29 points for the Northmen. But East Greenwich didn't go down easily, despite having to play catchup the entire game.  Seniors David Hopkins and Ryan Gavin led scoring for the Avengers, with 18 points and 14 points respectively.  The Avengers got to the D III final after a couple of great wins over, first, Mount Hope and then Middletown, after going 14-4 in the regular season.  "I’m so proud of my kids for their effort and respect they gave me all year," said Matt Records, who took over as coach for EG this season. EGHS Now Has A Real Avenger

The gift from the Class of 2012 – a nearly life-size knight on a horse – has been delivered and is just inside the gates of Carcieri Field awaiting its permanent placement.

It's sitting just inside the gates of Carcieri Field, a 600-pound, 11-foot-tall statue of an Avenger on a rearing horse – the gift of the Class of 2012.  The class recalled by their advisors at graduation last June as being larger than life has left a gift that will ensure they will not soon be forgotten. The metal statue came from Wynn Betts in Colorado. It was sent to Texas to have the Avenger welded in place and then driven across country in a U-Haul. It arrived in January. "I feel this was the perfect gift for our Class of 2012 to give to the school," said Chris Millman, class treasurer, via email. "By our senior year, we truly embodied the school spirit of true Avengers. It is symbolic for the growth and ability that all students …
