EG will play Middletown in the D III championship game Sunday afternoon at Carcieri Field.

They will play Middletown, the only team that's beaten EG this season. Middletown beat Narragansett 34-14 in their semi-final contest. The Avengers dominated the first half, with a touchdown by Carney Crawford (no extra point) in the first quarter and a TD by Meran Topalian in the second quarter. Off a fumble by Moses Brown with 2 minutes left in the half, Alex Cleary scored a touchdown (no extra point).  The Quakers got on the scoreboard at the end of the second quarter, with a touchdown …

Bronco Blowout Earns Avengers Playoff Spot

EG Football team wins against Burrillville, 48 to 0.

The Avengers hit on all cylinders Friday night in their game against the Broncos. Although Burrillville seemed to come out with some steam at the start of the game, they were no match against Av’s superior defense and EG just kept scoring, ending the game with a 48-0 blowout. A few minutes before the end of the first quarter, EG’s Alex Cleary started off the scoring, with a running touchdown, followed by his successful extra point kick. The Av’s offense was explosive in the second quarter, with a running touchdown by Carney Crawford, followed by a short passing touchdown by Jeremy Streich. EG’s Alex Cleary intercepted a pass by Bronco quarterback Isaiah DeSilva, running in the ball for a 41-yard touchdown. EG wrapped up the half with a 60…

Islanders Infringe On Avengers Undefeated Football Season

Tied going into the fourth quarter, Middletown outpaces EG for the win.

The EG Avengers faced their toughest opponent of the season this past Friday and came up short, losing to the Middletown Islanders 20-7. The Avengers were able to hold back the Islanders – who came into the game undefeated with an impressive offensive record and strong defense – until the second quarter, when Connor Russ ran the ball in for a touchdown, followed by a successful extra point kick by Preston Ferreira. The teams left the field at the half with the Islanders ahead 7-0. The Avengers came back well into the third quarter with a short running touchdown by Carney Crawford, followed by an extra point kick by Alex Cleary, tying the game.  EG’s offense was unable to penetrate the Islander defense in the last quarter despite an …

Avengers Edge Classical; Tonight's Game Vs. Middletown Is Big Test

In beating Classical 15-13 last week, EG Football improved to 7-0 overall.

The Avengers held on to their undefeated record last Saturday with a 15-13 win over Classical, setting up a battle royale against Middletown, which is also unbeaten so far this season. The Classical Purples quickly set the Avengers back on their heels last Saturday with a touchdown by Derek Jackson just minutes into the first quarter, although they missed the conversion kick. The Avenger’s defense came back, with EG’s Eric Lauro forcing a safety closing the gap to 2-6 for first quarter. EG scored on a touchdown pass by quarterback Andrew Miner to Pete Hunzicker in the second quarter, but also missed the conversion kick leaving the Avengers ahead 8-6 at the half. Girls Tennis Downs Lincoln School, 7-0

The Avengers, who just bumped back up to D-I this year, have a 10-1 record and are ranked #2 in D-1.

The EG Girls Tennis team continued its near-romp through Division I at home Tuesday, with a 7-0 win over Lincoln School. Their record in this is a remarkable 10-1, losing only to powerhouse La Salle. It's especially notable because they just moved up from Division II this season.  "We've secured the number 2 seed in all of Division I," said coach Marc Brocato. "They've practiced very hard to get to where they are. Division I tennis is brutal in Rhode Island." The Avengers didn't make it look to hard Tuesday, with straight-set wins all down the line and only seven games lost in the whole match. It helps to have the number 1 ranked player in the state, junior Alesandra Drljaca.  "She's undefeated," Brocato said. "She comes out to play hard …

EGHS Boys X-Country Wins Vermont Invitational

Led by team co-captain Ben Fazio, the team scored 106, a whopping 30 points better than second-place finisher South Burlington (Vt.) High, at the Woods Trail Run Invitational Saturday.

The EGHS Boys Cross Country team won the Wood’s Trail Run in Thetford, Vt., on Saturday, in a team tour de force, with co-captain Ben Fazio placing sixth overall and the rest of the seven member team placing in the top third. Woods Trail could be the toughest cross-country course in the Northeast, said EGHS coach Peter Dion. But the EG Boys X-Country – the dream team – had won it in 2007 and after a practice run on the course Friday evening, team members decided they could finish in the top three. “We went into this race hoping to do pretty well as a team. First is very high goal to set but we definitely thought top three was attainable,” said junior Garrett Scanlon, who placed 18th overall. “We talked and realized we could place in the …

Avengers Trip Up Tiverton Tigers

Varsity Football Team Continues Undefeated This Season

What a difference a year makes. Last year the Avengers fell to the Tiverton Tigers in a tough 41 to 14 loss. Now, in its third game of the season, the EGHS varsity football team walked away with a 28 to 6 win. The Avengers currently stand with a 2-0 division record and an overall 3-0 record.  Under the watchful eye of a small but vocal fan base, the Avengers did not put up any points until the second quarter when Carney Crawford ran in the first touchdown of the game with Alex Cleary making the extra point kick. The Avengers came on strong in the third quarter with Cleary returning a Tiger fumble for a touchdown, followed by a long run for a second touchdown by Cleary. Cleary made both extra point kicks. The Tigers came back with a …
