Rants and Raves

Main Street: Liquor Lane Or Wowza?

What we love and loathe about living in East Greenwich this month.

RANT: The recent hoopla over whether certain businesses should receive liquor licenses has left me scratching my head. A coffee shop is ok, but a dessert store isn’t? (In case you are thinking that it makes immense sense as those who over-imbibe at the coffee shop can quickly sober up with a few shots of high octane joe, studies published in Scientific American show that combining large amounts of alcohol and caffeine simultaneously can actually be lethal. So there.) OK, I don’t live with my head in a can. I get that laws can change attitudes and oftentimes, they can be the first step towards a change in mentality and our society’s values. The reality of this hit me on the noggin just last week when my kids and I were on vacation in Las …

I'd prefer to see more liquor licenses available. I think a craft beer bar on Main Street along the lines of Track 84 in Warwick or The Malted Barley in Westerly would be awesome. A brew pub somewhere in town would also be a fantastic addition, maybe even a nano-brewery or two, that poured growlers and had tasting rooms. Let's get with the times!   more ›

Cupcake Bakery Coming To 58 Main Street

Silver Spoon Bakery will focus on just two items: cupcakes and French macaroons.

It's official: Main Street is getting a bakery. But don't plan to pick up a fresh baguette there once it opens in November. Kelly Colgan, owner of Silver Spoon, appeared before the Town Council Monday night seeking a victualling license for her shop. The council voted 5-0 in favor of granting the license. "I’ve always baked. It was a hobby and I wanted to continue to further," she told the councilors, adding, "Cupcakes are very popular right now." Of course, many in East Greenwich will recall this is not the first cupcake business to open here. Sweet Nest …

5 Things You Need To Know Today

Five Things: Bakery On Main St.? Farmers Market On Rector

Your guide for life in East Greenwich today, Sept. 24.

Town Council meeting: Could it be a bakery is coming to Main Street? Well, the agenda says it could be so – Silver Spoon Bakery is applying for a victualling license. McDonald’s is also looking for a victualling license for a new restaurant on New London Turnpike. (And, just in case you – like me before I got this job – didn’t know, victualling means “provide with food.”) EG Farmers Market: It's official, fall is here. We may be sad about the passing of beach season, but a visit to the EG Farmers Market at Rector Street will make any sadness vanish. Fall foods are just so picturesque! Enjoy. From 3 to 6 p.m. (Parking is plentiful across Academy Field in the town and St. Luke's lot.) EGHS Home Games: Girls Tennis plays Portsmouth at 4 p.m…
