Hundreds of kids and parents turn out for the annual EG rite of spring known as the Little League Opening Day parade.
There just something about little league opening day festivities that makes you think all is right in the world. Even with the array of alternative sports that are now played in the spring (around here, lacrosse and soccer), baseball remains a touchstone sport. So it was on Saturday. The weather was perfect as children, coaches and parents gathered at Academy Field for the annual Opening Day Parade. Kids ran around playing and mugging for the camera, parents sipped coffee and coaches checked rosters. Then the parade. Marchers went from Church Street down to Main Street to First Avenue, across 2nd Street to to Fifth Avenue, and down to Cragan Field, home of East Greenwich Little League. At Cragan, there were speechs for the adults and a …

Ted Cullinane was the last player cut from the Holy Cross baseball team in 2011. The EGHS alum regrouped and worked harder … this year it paid off.
When Ted Cullinane played baseball for the East Greenwich High School Avengers, he was the golden boy: MVP his senior year, All Division, All Star. So when he was the last player cut from the team his freshman year at Holy Cross, it was tough. “Getting cut last year was one of the worst experiences I've faced as an athlete,” recalled Cullinane recently. “To try out with the team all fall and then to be told that there wasn't a spot for me was awful to hear.” But he didn’t quit. “Getting cut humbled me and taught me how much harder I needed to work in the off season in order to come back the next year to make the team,” he said. He kept playing baseball, using the way he felt when he was cut to motivate himself to work harder. “Besides …

Construction begins this week on the dugouts, but the baseball parents behind the construction are looking for donations.
When the new fields were built at East Greenwich High School, there were a few "extras" that were left undone, including the concession stand and some track and field equipment. In the past two years, both of those have been taken care of, but the baseball fields are still without dugouts. With the first home game of the new baseball season on April 10, a group of parents has arranged to have new dugouts constructed on the varsity baseball field. (The hope is to add dugouts at the junior varsity field and shelters at the softball fields in the future.) The School Committee voted to approve the construction at their meeting Tuesday. But the group — Diamond Baseball — is looking for donations to cover the $18,000 cost of materials and …

School Committee votes to allow parent group to construct dugouts on varsity baseball field.
The School Committee voted 5-1 Tuesday night to allow a nonprofit parent group to build two dugouts on the varsity baseball field at East Greenwich High School. Chair Deidre Gifford was the dissenting vote. The fields at EGHS were rebuilt in 2009. The old varsity baseball field had dugouts but, according to Mike Feeney, chair of the Fields Construction Committee during planning and most of the construction of the fields, dugouts were never part of the new fields design. “In a perfect world, it should have been included,” Feeney said about dugouts. “That was clearly a budget issue. That was not in the budget, just like field goal posts and the scoreboard.” Goal posts and a scoreboard were part of the fields project; Feeney was referring to…

Streich, EGHS Class of 2007, played baseball in Sweden last season. This season he’ll be playing for the Santa Fe Fuegos.
Matt Streich grew up playing sports, a lot of sports. While his passion was basketball, his talent pushed him to baseball. He played in East Greenwich Little League, for the Avengers and at Ithaca College. Now, after playing ball in Sweden last summer, Streich will head to New Mexico this spring to play on the Santa Fe Fuegos. “In Sweden this past summer, there were a couple of Americans on each team. I met another American who was from Arizona,” explained Streich. “He called me up in November out of the blue and said, ‘Hey, there’s this professional team starting up out of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and we’re trying to put a team together.” It didn’t take long for Streich to decide to say yes to the opportunity. The Fuegos are part of the …

Saturday's warm temperatures brought lots of people outside.
Cars were being washed, bikes were being ridden, baseball was being played — with temperatures well into the 50s Saturday, this wasn't your typical Jan. 7 day in East Greenwich. Not that you found anyone complaining. The weather Sunday won't be quite as warm - expect highs to stay in the 40s. On Monday, it will be feeling more January-ish, with temperatures only in the 30s.

EG Patch recounts the best sports stories of the year.
Looking back over the past year, there were several championship seasons in 2011 and several near misses too. Last spring yielded three state champion teams at East Greenwich High School. Then, this fall, EGHS saw state championships slip from their grasp three different times. For all the field teams, Carcieri Field is really home now, a year and a half after its delayed opening. Over the summer, town Public Works employees built the snack bar for the field, fulfulling a long-held dream for members of both the Booster Club and the Fields Committee. One sports story that didn’t make our top five this year but deserves a mention is the addition of lights at Cragan Field last May. Through its citrus drive, the EG Rotary Club continues to …
