Cole Girls Hoops Finish Season With Loss To Ponaganset

The Smithfield team overpowered EG in the first round of the playoffs, 49-39.

After a near-perfect regular season, the Lancers were handed a tough defeat Wednesday when they went up against Ponaganset Middle School in the first round of the playoffs. Ponaganset won 49-39. “It’s hard because we wanted it so bad,” said eighth grader Krisitin Carosotto, who scored 12 points in the game. Cole was down 15 points going into the fourth quarter. Courtney McMullen had back-to-back baskets to start it off and the Lancers outscored Ponaganset 13 to 8 in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough. McMullen had a good game, scoring three 3-pointers in the first half. “She had more 3’s today than we had the whole season,” said Coach Jason Martin. “It was a very physical game,” he said. “We had one of my players home sick today, my backup …

Boys Hoops: Cole Squeaks Past Ferri, 57-55 [VIDEO]

Down by 8 at the half, the Lancers battle back in first round of the playoffs.

The Cole Middle School Boys Basketball team went into the playoffs with a better record, 12-2, than its 8-4 opponent, Ferri Middle School of Johnston, but the Lancers had to fight back from an 8-point deficit at the half to secure their 57-55 win at home in the first round Tuesday. In the final seconds of the game, Cole eighth grader Brian Gemma hit a three-pointer to pull ahead of the Jaguars. He scored once more at the line and Ferri’s final shot bounced off the rim, giving the Lancers the win. “It was definitely Brian Gemma’s day. He did awesome,” said Cole coach Joe Szymkowicz afterwards. “He shoots a lot. Other coaches might yell and scream at him but he can shoot all day as far as I’m concerned because he doesn’t miss when it counts…

Pep Rally Caps Very Spirited Week At Cole

It's held in the new gym after the last two years "off campus" due to construction.

The Cole Middle School annual pep rally came home Friday afternoon, after two years of night games at the high school. The culminating event of Spirit Week, the rally pitted students against teachers, both teams cheered on by a gym full of students and staff members. It came down to the teachers' last shot at the buzzer for 2 points, giving them a tie, 34-34. "It's nice being back home," said P.E. teacher Deb McMullen. "We did it at the high school at night the last two years, so it was nice being back home with our new gym and our new set up. It really added to it." For the students, playing against their teachers was a little strange ... initially. "It was really awkward at first because you didn't know what to do. And then it got …
