Benny’s Or Bust: Man Bent On Battery Purchase Hits Car, Which Hits Another

Information about the following arrests was supplied by the East Greenwich Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Monday, Sept. 5 2:37 p.m. - Police arrested Louis Prete, 51, of Warwick on a variety of charges after the boat trailer being towed by his truck hit a car in the Benny’s parking lot, which led to that car hitting a third car. According to the driver of the third car, Prete continued driving toward Benny’s, then walked into the store, even after being confronted about the accident. By the time police arrived, Prete was leaving Benny’s carting a marine battery he said was needed by his friend, who was stranded. He gave the police a false name and birthdate and said he did not realize he’d hit another car. He did not smell of alcohol but seemed under the influence of something, according to the police report. After failing the field sobriety …

Town officials are coordinating and generators are selling out

Generators were flying out the doors early Thursday at Salk’s Ace Hardware on Post Road and everyone at Benny’s was picking up flashlights and batteries at midday. At the public boat launch, people were beginning to line up to get their boats out of the water. Hurricane Irene is making itself felt in EG days before it’s due to arrive. "Why take the chance?" said Jerry Hartley at the town dock Thursday. He was waiting to pull his quahog boat out of the water. "We've been flat out all day," said Sue Wild at Salk's Ace Hardware. People were waiting outside the store when she arrived at 7:50, she said. "We sold nothing but generators for an hour and a half."
