Ballot question on merging Fire District with Town approved.
Voters in East Greenwich returned all incumbents to office, with the five Republican Town Council members and School Committee Chair Deidre Gifford winning re-election. Newcomers Carolyn Mark and Clark Smith also won seats on the School Committee. Republican Anthony Giarrusso was leading the R.I. House Dist. 30 race by 36 votes over Democrat Mark Schwager, with more than 500 mail ballots and the portion of West Greenwich that belongs to Dist. 30 still uncounted. Giarrusso got 2,798 votes in East Greenwich and Schwager got 2,762. Kevin McDonough, an independent, got 755 votes. Brad Bishop, who was named to fill the remainder of Henry Boezi's term on the Town Council, is running for his first full term.
Brad Bishop, who is running for a full term on the Town Council, served on the Planning Board for eight years, the last four as chair, before deciding to run for Council in June. After the death of Councilman Henry Boezi, Bishop was named to fill out Boezi's term on the council in July. So, while Bishop is now on the Town Council, this is his first run for elected office. A Republican, Bishop works in marketing for SmartPak Equine in Plymouth, Mass. Bishop says the experience he’s gained serving on the Planning Board – where he’s chair – would benefit the council.
After eight years on the Planning Board, Brad Bishop announced Tuesday he will run for Town Council in the upcoming election. “I do really like contributing back to the town,” he said. “On a more practical level, I have expertise that would be useful.” He cited the extensive work done by the Planning Board on the town’s new Comprehensive Plan and its efforts to bring more state-mandated affordable housing in town. Bishop has served as chair of the Planning Board since 2008. Just some points to consider: 1. Maybe they created a separate Fire District to keep the Council out of the Fire business 2. Have the Council focus on the Town's issues before they worry about a well run, proven in its annual audit, Fire District 3.
