Boys LAX Win Last Regular Season Game Against Mt. Hope, 9-6

EGHS Boy’s Lacrosse Team Enters Post-Season with 13-0 Division Record

The East Greenwich High School Boys Varsity Lacrosse team traveled to Bristol last Monday to face the Mount Hope Huskies for their last regular season game. The Huskies strategy of aggressive play proved challenging for the Avengers, who ultimately found their way to a 9-6 victory resulting in a 13-0 division record for the season for EG.  The Avengers lead the league in goals scored with 158 with only 66 goals against the team. Leading scorers for EG were Ethan Zink (45 goals/35 assists), Kyle Carosotto (40 goals/17 assists), and Ryan Trinque (26 goals/10 assists). Goalie Jack Trutza had a 60 percent save percentage and the team presented a strong defense led by the efforts of Connor Finn, Britt Conde, and Matt McBreen. Supporting the …

Mount St. Charles Mounties Can’t Hold Back Avengers

EGHS Varsity Boys Lacrosse team leads division with 8-0 record.

The Mounties took first blood in Saturday’s varsity lacrosse game against the EGHS Avengers, scoring just seconds into the game. Strong defense on both sides resulted in no additional goals in the first quarter.  Mt. St. Charles continued their aggressive play in the second quarter, ending the half with a 4-2 lead.  The Avengers were just beginning to come back in the third quarter when they scored a frustrating goal against themselves. However, as with recent games, the players came back strong, scoring eight goals in the last half of the game. The Avengers were able to hold the lead, resulting in a 10-9 win against the Mounties to further their lead to 8-0 within Division II and 9-1 overall.  Captain Ethan Zink led the team’s offensive …

Avengers Roll Over PCD Knights

Lacrosse team continues winning season.

Only the heartiest of EG hometown fans came out Wednesday night braving the threat of rain to cheer on the EG Avenger Varsity Lacrosse team to its seventh victory of the season. The Avengers continued their winning season with aggressive play in a non-division game against Providence Country Day ending in a 10-6 win.   As last year’s defending Division II Champion, the team looks to continue on a similar path this season. “Everyone’s excited to play and our team simply wants to be out on the field," said co-captain Matt Cruise. “We’ve created a family environment and whether it be JV or Varsity, we all get along, we’re all friends, and we’re all brothers.”   The varsity team has started slow over the last few games with momentum building …

Best Of Stories, 2011: Sports

EG Patch recounts the best sports stories of the year.

Looking back over the past year, there were several championship seasons in 2011 and several near misses too. Last spring yielded three state champion teams at East Greenwich High School. Then, this fall, EGHS saw state championships slip from their grasp three different times. For all the field teams, Carcieri Field is really home now, a year and a half after its delayed opening. Over the summer, town Public Works employees built the snack bar for the field, fulfulling a long-held dream for members of both the Booster Club and the Fields Committee. One sports story that didn’t make our top five this year but deserves a mention is the addition of lights at Cragan Field last May. Through its citrus drive, the EG Rotary Club continues to …

Avengers End Islanders' Division Title Hopes

Despite a delay due to erratic and dangerous local weather, the Avengers from EG ended the Islanders' upset run with a dominating 15-4 win at home, advancing them to the State Title game against Prout.

The Middletown High School Islanders lacrosse team entered the contest against East Greenwich with a chip on their shoulder. The Avengers didn't have a regular season record to put a dent in that chip, but the two teams, seeded No. 6 and No. 7 went in to battle on Wednesday night with EG moving on to the Division II South Title game after winning 15-4. EG went ahead early and big, dominating the Islanders in nearly every facet of the game. The Islanders battled but could not match the offensive output of the Avengers, going down 14-3 in the fourth period before the game was halted due to lightning strikes nearby. While EG only scored one goal over the final nine minutes of play, the Islanders could only match the Avengers' offensive output…

Thank you for the great story on EGHS quest for their 1st Division II lacrosse championship. All aspects of the game have come together over the last weeks, for sure. Phenomenal goal tending by Dante Granitero, defense, middies and attack have balanced our game peaking at the right time, for sure. We played Prout at home and won, lost a very close game at their field 6-5, this should be the game …   more ›
