The East Greenwich U10 Boys Anchor team participated in the 32nd Annual Barrington Invitational Tournament on November 3 and 4, 2012. The team completed the tournament 4-0 after a very successful fall season in the RI Super Liga. Congratulations to the team! The Avengers are looking strong heading into the playoffs, which start next week.
East Greenwich and Westerly ended their only game of the regular season in a scoreless tie, bringing the Avengers Boys Soccer record to 5-2-5. "Out of 12 games, we've only lost 2," said EG Coach Pat McGuirl after the Monday game. "We've always had good games with Westerly. It's always a physical game and today was no exception." The game had playoff atmosphere to it, he said. "There was close back and forth, and it was low scoring." That could be a good thing, since the playoffs start next week and EG has secured a berth, though just what berth must still be worked out. EG Patch recounts the best sports stories of the year.
Looking back over the past year, there were several championship seasons in 2011 and several near misses too. Last spring yielded three state champion teams at East Greenwich High School. Then, this fall, EGHS saw state championships slip from their grasp three different times. For all the field teams, Carcieri Field is really home now, a year and a half after its delayed opening. Over the summer, town Public Works employees built the snack bar for the field, fulfulling a long-held dream for members of both the Booster Club and the Fields Committee. One sports story that didn’t make our top five this year but deserves a mention is the addition of lights at Cragan Field last May. Through its citrus drive, the EG Rotary Club continues to …

Senior co-captain Zeke Farrell of Cranston scored two goals in a 3-2 win over Brimmer and May on Wednesday.
The Rocky Hill School boys’ varsity soccer team hosted Brimmer and May from Chestnut Hill, Mass., in a New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Class D tournament quarterfinal match Wednesday afternoon. Less than 20 minutes into the match, senior co-captain Zeke Farrell of Cranston scored his 15th goal of the season. That score held until halftime as Rocky Hill dominated the majority of play. Midway through the second half, however, two quick goals by the visiting team caught the Rocky Hill defense off guard. For the second year in a row, the Sentinels win the Division II crown by beating the Avengers at Rhode Island College.
Ultimately, the Smithfield Sentinels were not to be denied, as they completed an undefeated season with a 3-1 win in the Division II championship against East Greenwich at Rhode Island College on Saturday afternoon. The Sentinels scored two goals in the fifth minute, and never trailed against the Avengers. Mark Marino had the first cap, and also added another goal in the 23rd minute. Jobe Ebrima scored the other goal in the fifth minute. East Greenwich junior Anthony Padrazo scored in the 12th minute, to momentarily get the Avengers within a goal. East Greenwich beat Tolman 1-0 Monday night under the lights at Carcieri Field, moving into the championship round against Smithfield for the second year in a row in a game that will be played on Sunday at Rhode Island College at 2 p.m. In last year’s D-2 championship game, the unbeaten senior-heavy Avengers lost to Smithfield 3-2. This year, Smithfield is unbeaten, with a record of 17-0-2. EG goes into the final game with a 14-4-0 record. Melnick, Goodwin lead Avengers past Mount
East Greenwich got two goals from senior Anthony Melnick to defeat Mount St. Charles 2-1 in the Division-2 quarterfinals Saturday. For the fourth-consecutive year, the Avengers will play in the semi-finals, which will take place on their home field Monday night versus Tolman. Mount St. Charles, playing their aggressive style of play, took control of the pace early. Just eight minutes into the game, senior Evan Traumuller put a shot past EG goalie Oscar Goodwin for a 1-0 advantage. Paolo Roche got loose from an EG defender and was able to get a high shot off past Goodwin. It came down to which team wanted it more. For the second time this season, that team was Coventry, beating East Greenwich, the top team in DII-South, Wednesday night by a score of 2-1. The win gave the Oakers a spot in the playoffs. The Avengers go into the playoffs with a 12-4 record.
