Boys Soccer Team Beats Toll Gate At Home, 4-3

The teams kept answering each other, goal for goal, with EG getting the last word.

East Greenwich came up the winner after a see-saw matchup against Tollgate Tuesday afternoon on Nick Carcieri Field, 4-3. A late-game goal by Tollgate tied it up, but the whistle blew before the ball reached the goal and it was called back for a foul. "They're a good team. Toll Gate's a good team. They played well," said Avenger Coach Patrick McGuirl. "We were lucky to get out of here. They didn't give up right up to the last minute. They had one called back for a foul. We were very fortunate, very fortunate. We'll take it." Junior forward Anthony Padrazo scored in the first half for the Avengers. Toll Gate's Josh Sandin tied it up before the half. In the second half, Sandin went on to score two more goals in the second half, with a goal …

EGHS Boys Soccer Beats Narragansett 1-0

East Greenwich earns the determining goal in the first half of the Friday afternoon game

East Greenwich would score the only goal of the game in a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Narragansett Friday afternoon in boys’ soccer action. The Avengers (4-0, 4-0 Division II-South) scored in the 33rd minute. Off of a corner kick, freshman Gregory Kehoe put a ball toward net that senior Derek Ferra was able to tap in. “It was a good ball by Kehoe,” Ferra said, adding that it led to an easy tap-in for him. “I didn’t know if he meant to cross it or shoot it.” Narragansett head coach Ryan Kanaczet said that although his team lost, he was happy with their this early in the season, against another Division II team he expects to see near the top of the standings. “It wasn’t a bad loss, East Greenwich is number one in our division,” he said…

EGHS Boys Soccer Take Season Opener Against Prout, 1-0

Tyler Amaral scores the only goal of the game in the first half

Even without the 12 varsity players who graduated in June, the young Avenger boys soccer team did better than hold up against Prout Thursday night at Carcieri Field - they beat them, 1-0. “Good start, boys,” said Coach Pat McGuirl after the game, as the boys picked up their things and started to head for the locker room. In reviewing the game, McGuirl said that the biggest change this year is that the defenders are all new starters - one freshman, two sophomores and a junior - but they did all right on Thursday. Goalie and senior Oscar Goodwin agreed. “There are some big kids on the other team and they held their own, which was really good,” Goodwin said of the defense. Goodwin performed well too, with 11 saves on the game and no goals …

EGHS Fall Sports Round-Up, Part 2

Field Hockey, Boys Soccer, Boys Volleyball, and Cross Country

Besides the football, tennis, and girls soccer teams, the EGHS field hockey, volleyball, and boys soccer teams also look forward on having strong seasons.  Field Hockey During the 2010 season, the field hockey team lost only one game in their state championship run. However, despite losing nine seniors, Coach McMullen does not see this season as a rebuilding year. “This will be a deeper team (than last year’s)” she said, noting that there will be more contributors on this team than there was on last year’s state championship team.  The new depth on this year’s team will be a result of younger players who Coach McMullen confidently said “can step right in.” Coach McMullen gives credit to her captains Katie Sloat and Taylor Christie, who …

5 Things You Need To Know Today

Trash, Schools, Soccer & More

Five things you need to know about East Greenwich today, August 30.

Trash collection delayed one day: If your trash is usually picked up on Tuesdays, it will be picked up on Wednesday this week. And so on. Yard waste from the hurricane will be picked up in coming days. The town Dept. of Public Works asks that residents pile up debris by the side of the street, as you would your trash cans. Use yard waste bags for the smaller pieces of debris. School Delayed At Least A Day: Supt. Victor Mercurio notified families via phone last night that school would start on Thursday, but that’s contingent on power getting back on to all the schools in the district - several of which were still in the dark as of Monday evening.
