Alice was a fixture behind the counter at Briarbrook Farm – "the stand" – her family's garden store on South County Trail.
If you bought plants or pies or fresh corn at Briarbrook Farm, you knew Alice Thompson. She was the woman behind the counter wearing the big smile and the glamorous hairdo. Alice died Monday, at age 72. The daughter of Hilda B. (Holroyd) Thompson and the late Lewis Thompson, Alice was born in Providence but raised in East Greenwich. She graduated from EG High School in 1958. Alice was a flight attendant for American Airlines in the early 1960s. A sudden illness – spinal meningitis – halted her career but she joined her family, working at Briarbrook for the next 47 years. According to her sister, Nanci, Alice was diagnosed last March with a very rare form of Parkinson’s disease – cortical basal ganglionic degeneration (CBGD). She was …

No School: For the second day in a row, school is cancelled. School officials have not yet decided if Thursday, Nov. 1, will remain a day off but we’ll keep you posted. Town offices will be open: As of Monday night at 10 p.m., town offices will be open and senior services and Parks & Rec programs will go on as scheduled. No trash pickup: There is no trash pickup Tuesday. Trash for Monday and Tuesday will be picked up on Wednesday. The remainder of the week will have a one-day delay. No yard waste will be picked up this week. Town crews will resume yard waste pickup once emergency cleanup is over. The trees appear right after Thanksgiving at a select number of places in town – in front of the Greenwich Club, over on Frenchtown Road at John’s Bait & Tackle and at Briarbrook Nursery on South County Trail. In the old days, of course, Christmas trees didn't go up until Dec. 24, with the biggest part of the holiday being celebrated between Christmas and New Year's. These days, we’re putting up our trees earlier and earlier. If you are buying a cut tree, however, fire safety requires that you do everything you can to make sure it stays fresh for the duration of its holiday life.
