Blizzard Barista Keeps Coffee Flowing

Sarah Grillo opened up at Felicia's Saturday morning expecting to serve a few plow drivers, but got slammed.

When the blizzard hit last week, Felicia Revens was away, but she wanted to open up her coffee shop as soon as possible to be a resource for those working the storm. She arranged to have her cousin, Jamie Piscopio, who has a truck, pick up Sarah Grillo, who lives downtown, to have her open up.  The idea was other workers would follow, but with road conditions so bad, it soon became clear that Grillo was going to have to handle things herself. "We didn't think it was going to be busy," Grillo said. "We opened at 7 and there were plow drivers already waiting."  By 8 a.m., things started getting really busy.  "Everyone that came in kept saying we were the only place open around for miles and miles," said Grillo. "It was just nonstop." Grillo…

Custom House Coffee Closes [POLL]

Owners of the Main Street coffee shop decide to focus their efforts on a new Fall River store.

It worked in Portsmouth, it worked in Middletown, but Custom House Coffee never took off in East Greenwich so the owners have closed it down. "We love the town. It's a great community. It just never caught on," said George Doumaney, co-owner with Mark Libby. "Our other locations are so busy, just constantly busy. It pains Mark and I but we had to make a business decision to close it down because it never took off." Custom House Coffee opened in September 2010. Last summer, they obtained a liquor license. But now they're focusing their efforts on their two existing East Bay stores and a new one planned for Commonwealth Landing in Fall River, a mill building that's being converted. "The product is alive and well," said Doumaney, referring …

Custom House Coffee Is Keeping Up With the Competition

With their recently approved liquor license, Custom House Coffee plans to extend its beverage and food offerings.

In just a few weeks, Custom House Coffee is going to have the best of both worlds at its Main Street location. According to owner Mark Libby, as soon as it receives its formal liquor license, Custon House Coffee will begin offering upscale martinis, specialty coffee drinks with added liquor, high-end wines and beers, along with a few added items to their food menu.  Libby says although business in their East Greenwich store has been steady since it opened about a year ago, one of its main competitors, Mainstreet Coffee, has a full liquor license, which is part of what prompted Libby to pursue the license for his business.  “Our business is growing each day and we are always looking for more opportunity to grow,” Libby said. “People who …

There seems to be quite a bit of turnover on main...is there a common thread? High rents? Not enough traffic/parking? Boutique-type shops not competing with Route 2?   more ›
