Town's Comprehensive Plan Has Become Comprehensive Headache

The town sought a "user-friendly plan"; the state says the plan must adhere more closely to state's own goals and policies.

The town's comprehensive plan is a document few residents ever see, but is something meant to guide the town's actions in a variety of areas, from land use and open space to economic development and community services.  A regularly updated plan is also something the state requires. East Greenwich embarked on drafting a new "comp plan," as it is known, three years ago. With the finish line clearly in sight, however, the plan hit up against a state review that presented a variety of objections, most significantly that the information needed to be presently differently. I have been critical of the concept of a state-mandated plan since it's inception. How can a community commit to a plan for the community (ie's land-use...) to serve into the (unforeseen) future when that future is anything besides predictable or static? Wickford Envy? Maybe Not... And Planning Beyond The Status Quo

What to love and loathe about living in East Greenwich this week.

RAVE: I am going to admit this upfront: I have Wickford envy. It hits me every time I walk up Brown Street (they’re too swank to call it Main Street like the rest of us poor schlubs). The town is just so darn quaint. Well, I’m over it now. Walking in Scalloptown Park the other day, my husband, in a rare expansive mood, swept his arms wide and declaimed, “Where else can you get such a pristine view? No billboards or traffic noise and we’re right in the heart of downtown East Greenwich.” The fact that the Acela blew past at that moment sort of ruined the moment, but I understood his point.
