Colour of London, a Nashville-based band, will be performing a free concert there, to be filmed for a video sponsored by Alex and Ani.
If you want to be in a music video – and you are at least 21 – tonight is the night! Colour of London, a Nashville-based band, will be performing a free concert at the Main Street theater while cameras roll for the music video to promote their Alex and Ani-sponsored "Path of Life Tour." Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Alex and Ani is of course the jewelry (and more) company out of Cranston that has a shop on Main Street and a warehouse facility on Liberty Street. Colour of London is a band made up of a duo out of Nashville, Tennessee singer/musician Jimmie Allen (who was an American Idol contestant during the 2011 season) and guitarist Nate Woodall. Here's the info from the Alex and Ani website: It is a rare case when a band comes to town and is…

The nonprofit group is trying to get back on firm financial footing.
Summer's End, East Greenwich's signature summer event for the past 16 years, is at a financial crossroads. One way forward would be to charge admission, something SAFO President Patrick Craft said they are considering, if not very happily. "The cost of the show is more than $80,000. It’s cost prohibitive in terms of how we’re currently structured," said Craft in a recent interview. "Do we put people at the gates and charge? I would hate to see that only because it’s had a longstanding tradition of being a free concert at the end of the summer." Last year, SAFO made one big, cost-saving change – having the U.S. Navy Band perform instead of the Rhode Island Philharmonic. As popular as the R.I. Phil is, it would cost about $25,000 to have …

Your guide for life in East Greenwich today, July 26.
Funeral for Henry Boezi: A Mass of Celebration for Henry Boezi, the Town Councilman and former town engineer who died Saturday, takes place this morning at St. Francis de Sales in North Kingstown at 10 a.m. Town Offices closed 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.: All offices, except the Parks & Rec., are closed so employees may attend the Boezi funeral. My Henry story: It turns out that many, many people in town have a Henry story. I have one too. A couple years ago on a warm summer morning, while walking my dog through the cemetery on First Avenue, I came upon a man wearing a white undershirt, digging in some flowers by a grave. I saw it was Henry and said hello. It was gravesite of his wife, Teresa. “I miss her,” he told me. I can’t walk that way …

The truth is, East Greenwich doesn't have much going on, but you don't have to go too far.
No, East Greenwich, doesn't have a parade on the 4th of July. Nor do we have a town fireworks display. But it tends to work out okay because our neighbors do and, if you can get to the water, you'll be able to see displays from all around Narragansett Bay. So, first order of business: What's open and what's closed? Banks will be closed. Markets will be open. Liquor stores will be open, but contact them directly for hours. Restaurants are open on a case-by-case basis. The Village Cafe, for instance, is closed on July 4. Beaches: They will be crowded, most likely. So, bring plenty of patience along with your sunscreen and cold beverages. Where you can see fireworks: There will be fireworks at the Oakland Beach Seawall in Warwick on Tuesday…

To celebrate EG’s history as possible birthplace of the Navy, and to save some money, the Navy Pops Ensemble will take the place of the R.I. Philharmonic this year.
After 15 years of hosting the Rhode Island Philharmonic in concert at Academy Field for Summer’s End, the Summer's End organization has contracted with the Navy Band to perform in 2012. In addition, there will be fireworks. According to Summer’s End president Russell Knight, a Navy man himself, the decision to go with the Navy Band — more accurately, the Navy Pops Ensemble — was two-fold. First, it’s a way to celebrate East Greenwich’s place in naval history as one of the birthplaces of the U.S. Navy. Second, it’s the bicentennial of the War of 1812, when a young United States Navy fought back the very seasoned British Navy. Knight said the Pops Ensemble is a 40-piece band that performs light classical, jazz, and Broadway music and …

On behalf of the Summer’s End Board, I want to provide some clarification. As stated, the US Navy Band performs for free so admission cannot be charged for those concerts. Our patron fund raising and corporate sponsorship drives are underway and we are planning like last year to have board members and volunteers at the gates collecting donations. These contributions help offset the costs of such …   more ›
