Cranston's Olivia Culpo Crowned Miss Universe

Rhode Island — and the rest of the USA — was rooting for hometown girl Olivia Culpo, who won the Miss Universe title tonight.

Cranston's own Olivia Culpo has another crown to put next to her Miss USA crown: Miss Universe. Culpo, who won the Miss USA title in June, is a Cranston native. "It's a dream," she said the moment she won. Culpo was wearing a Sherri Hill dress and shoes from Chinese Laundry when she was named a top 16 finalist. In an interview during the show, Culpo said one thing people might not know about her is "I'm really easy going." "Any joke — I'll get it. A lot of time, people think of beauty queens almost being plastic. I can take jokes. I can take anything," she said. In the evening gown competition, Culpo wore a long, red flowing dress with revealing cleavage. Host Guliana Rancic said she was "certainly a mermaid," and "looks like a jewel." …

Rants and Raves

Dang Dances And Darn Good DPW

What to love and hate about living in East Greenwich this week.

RANT: First Dodgeball, now parent-child dances and ballgames have been banned. Has the world gone crazy? Or is it just Cranston (if you missed the story, after a year in which they already battled to keep prayer – or at least a prayer banner – in school – the school system nixed all father-daughter dances/mother-son soccer matches in response to an ACLU suit that claimed they were in violation of state gender discrimination laws)? The thing is, I have mixed feelings about similar father/daughter-mother/son events that take place in our own school community. On one hand, they have a sweet nostalgic aura of simpler times that bring to mind town picnics, Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney putting on a play, and going down to the drugstore for a …

Well, well said, Timmy...The world is a different place these days..Like it or not, it is not the place of a few to make choices for the majority..Wether through divorce, death or gender preference, the tide has shifted when it comes to the social world (including childrens activities). Life is moving and changing at a fast pace...It is time for people to catch up!!   more ›

EG Candidate Mark Co-Signed Father-Daughter Dance Letter To Cranston

In her role as president of R.I. NOW, School Committee candidate Carolyn Mark co-signed the letter with the ACLU urging Cranston schools to stop supporting gender-specific events.

Carolyn Mark, East Greenwich School Committee candidate, co-signed the now-famous letter sent last May to the Cranston School Department decrying a father-daughter-type dance at a public school there. Mark signed the letter, along with the ACLU's Stephen Brown, in her capacity as president of R.I. NOW. The letter was in response to a mother’s complaint that the dance unfairly excluded her daughter, who she said had no adult male to accompany her. “She called us to express concerns about an upcoming event that has been scheduled by the school PTO group. Although we do not expect anything to be done before that event takes place, both the ACLU and RI NOW share her concerns. We are therefore writing to request that you intervene to address …

As the editor of our Patch, I think Elizabeth knows quite well what the very purpose of this website. In my experience it is normal for there to be such restrictions to be enforced on an online discussion. Making personal attacks has also been called flaming and it is not only not part of robust discussion, it gets in the way of discussion. If personal attacks are banned, writers have to take the…   more ›

Three-Car Accident on Route 2 Causes Backup

Two the cars involved were part of a funeral procession

Around 11:40 a.m. this Monday morning, three cars were involved in an accident while traveling south on South County Trail just past Middle Road. Although drivers appeared shaken, no one was taken by rescue from the scene. Two couples were following each other from a memorial service to the burial site when the first driver said a tractor-trailer suddenly pulled out in front of him causing everyone to slam on their brakes. Each car slammed into the next as the tractor trailer kept driving, the driver said. The woman from the third car from East Greenwich was shaken and upset. "The other drivers are telling the police about the tractor trailer right now," she said, asking not to be identified. The other two couples from Cranston and West …

From the photos, it looks as if that tractor trailer most likely left that intersection just South of the Middle Rd intersection. It's a blinking light intersection. Maybe if the lights functioned, this would have been avoided.   more ›
