Sen. Whitehouse Meets Residents At Community Dinner [VIDEO]

The largely friendly crowd gets treated to free pasta and meatballs and that Rhode Island specialty: one-on-one time with your U.S. Senator.

Sara Cronin of East Greenwich decided to attend Sunday night’s “community dinner” with Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse for one main reason — that she could. In Rhode Island, it’s not improbable that you can meet both of your U.S. senators. “In such a small state, it’s great to have the opportunity to get so close and personal with your senator,” said Cronin, who brought her two children, Jackson 12, and Megan 11. “In most states, you don’t have that opportunity. I think it’s great for kids to learn about their government and be able to meet their senators. I wanted my kids to come and learn.” And indeed the turnout was good in the cafetorium at Cole Middle School — more than 100 people were there from towns including EG, Warwick, West Warwick, …

You Pick: Best Place to Take Your Valentine in EG

Tell us your favorite local spot for a romantic meal.

Valentine's Day is Tuesday, and for the couples among us, that usually means a romantic dinner at a favorite local restaurant. Whether it's a corner booth at Siena, a cosy dinner at the bar at Bistro Nine, or sharing a pie at Frank & John's because it was the site of your first date — we want to hear your thoughts on which local restaurant is best for a special Valentine's night meal. Vote in our poll below, then share your thoughts in the comments section. If we left your favorite restaurant off the list, note that in the comments as well. We'll leave the poll up all week then close voting at 9 a.m. Friday. At noon that day, we'll share your top local pick. Then be sure to watch the site over the weekend when we tally up the top votes …

Christ Church Invites Community For Christmas Eve Dinner

The annual event draws lots of volunteers as well as grateful diners.

This may come as a surprise, but according to Christ Church's Christmas Eve dinner organizer Melissa Corcoran, the hardest part of her job is making sure she finds something to do for everyone who comes to help. "We have so many volunteers, just trying to find something for everyone to do is hard. We have an overabundance," said Corcoran, who headed up the dinner for the second year. Christ Church has been holding the dinner, which took place Saturday night at the American Legion Hall, for 21 years. In addition to the volunteers who came to serve on Saturday, a crew of others from Christ Church got together earlier in the week to make table decorations - this year, cardboard Christmas trees dotted with gum drops. Hung from the ceiling were…

Food Only Part of Christmas Eve Dinner Draw

For 20 years, Christ Church has hosted supper on Christmas Eve, welcoming parishioners and community members a like.

T'was the night before Christmas and all through the house, many people were stirring ... and slicing, and serving at Christ Church's annual Christmas Eve supper at the American Legion Hall. For Bob Thompson of East Greenwich, this dinner with friends old and new has become a welcome activity on Christmas Eve. On Friday, Thompson sat across the table from his brother but everyone else at the table was someone new. "The food's good," he said. "It's the best place I have to go to on Christmas Eve. A lot of good people here." According to Melissa Corcoran, who headed up the dinner this year, this is its 20th year. "The focus is from everyone from all walks of life," she said, "people who may be alone and people who are in need of a hot meal…
