The 13-year-old boy was killed when a drunk 17-year-old EGHS student hit him while he was walking on First Avenue in the middle of the day.
Richard Morsilli can't speak. He's in the middle of a story about his son Todd and he stops mid-sentence, caught up by the raw emotion his words recall. Thirty years ago last week, 13-year-old Todd Morsilli was walking with his cousin on First Avenue just past the split with Division Street when a high school junior hit him while driving west on First Avenue. Todd was thrown up onto a snowbank. He was declared dead before his parents were able to get to the hospital. "They took you in a room and they told you Todd was hit by a car and he didn’t make it," says Carol Morsilli, Todd's mother. With the Rhode Island State Police, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and other community partners announcing a “365 Days of Safety” initiative earlier this week to ensure the state’s roadways are safe, especially during New Year’s, State Senator-Elect Lou Raptakis said he is planning to support that effort by introducing a series of bills targeting repeat drunk driving offenders. Raptakis said he will introduce legislation to go after hard-core drunk drivers and strengthen the state’s drunk driving laws. Rhode Island State Police Colonel Steven G. O’Donnell announced today that during the upcoming New Year’s holiday, the Rhode Island State Police will have additional patrols throughout the state. The force will be stepping up enforcement for speeding, driving while impaired, aggressive driving, texting violations, seat belt, and child restraint violations. These patrols are in addition to regular patrols and are targeting impaired and reckless operators. The goal is to make our highways safer and everyone’s New Year a happy and memorable one, O'Donnell said in a release. The former state representative for East Greenwich is facing charges of drunk driving and possession of marijuana from an incident in April 2011.
Former state Rep. Bob Watson of East Greenwich will proceed to trial on drunken driving and possession of marijuana charges stemming from an April 2011 stop at a sobriety checkpoint in East Haven, Conn., the Providence Journal reported Wednesday. Watson failed to reach a plea agreement with prosecutors Tuesday in his final conference before trial. He is expected to go on trial in January in Superior Court in New Haven, according to his lawyer, Jack O’Donnell. Watson was pulled over during a routine sobriety check point set up on Friday evening, April 22, 2011, in East Haven. Nicholas Morin, 23, of Warwick was charged with driving under the influence.
Two people were injured and one of them was arrested after a two-car crash on Post Road in Cowesett Tuesday night, according to a story in the Providence Journal. The crash — described by police as a head-on, sideswipe collision — happened at 9:03 p.m. on Post Road at Ladd Street, just north of Division Street, Warwick police Lt. Michael Ford said. Both drivers were extricated from their vehicles and taken to Rhode Island Hospital with “serious but not life-threatening” injuries, according to the Providence Journal. A MADD reports ranks Rhode Island as one of the worst states in the nation at employing drunk driving countermeasures.
Rhode Island ranks as one of the five-worst states in America at preventing drunk driving, according to a new report by MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving). According to the report, Montana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and South Dakota each earned one star on 1 to 5 scale that measures the effectiveness of each state in passing laws and employing drunk driving countermeasures. According to the report, estate’s rating was determined by adoption of the following proven drunk driving countermeasures: Connecticut and Massachusetts each had three stars. Arizona, Illinois, Kansas, Nebraska and Utah were the only states to receive five stars. The report also says that drunk driving kills about 11,000 people annually on U.S. roads.
