The third-annual Martin Luther King Jr. Basketball Tournament presented by the EG Basketball Association is taking place this weekend. There are 118 teams participating, with players in grades 4 through 9 from Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts, and there will be 145 games played between Friday night and Monday. Games will be played at EGHS, Cole Middle School and Rocky Hill School. If you take pictures or shoot video of any of the action, upload it here so everyone can see it. EGHS PTG meeting this morning: All parents of EGHS students are welcome to come to the monthly meeting. At 9:30 at the high school cafeteria. Planning Board meeting: On the agenda is a preliminary plan application for the development “One American Way,” consisting of two office buildings with a total of 33,600 square feet and three additional buildings containing “industrial condominiums” off Middle Road at the end of On-Semi Way (just east of South County Trail). They will also discuss the status of the ongoing Comprehensive Plan update. The panel will meet at Town Hall at 7 p.m. Paint It Purple Night at EGHS: On Friday night, EGHS is hosting two varsity basketball games. The Ocean State Health and Fitness ninth and tenth grade boys basketball team won the first Championship of the 2011-12 East Greenwich Basketball Association with a solid 60-50 win against Harris Blinds and Shutters. With the game being played before a packed house at East Greenwich High School, Ocean State Health and Fitness jumped out to a fast start paced by a hot shooting and fast-break attack. Led by the shooting of Kyle Matus and Quinn Sullivan, the nets were sizzling and the crowd was abuzz. With Ross Dean playing shutdown defense and Jake Batista ruling the backboards, the Ocean State Health team had a comfortable lead at the half. More than 100 teams are participating in the East Greenwich Basketball Association's second-annual Martin Luther King Jr. Basketball Tournament this weekend. With a double-elimination format, that makes for one heck of a lot of basketball!
