EG Hoops Completes Second Season

In the league's first championship game, Ocean State Health and Fitness beat Harris Blinds and Shutters, 60-50.

The Ocean State Health and Fitness ninth and tenth grade boys basketball team won the first Championship of the 2011-12 East Greenwich Basketball Association with a solid 60-50 win against Harris Blinds and Shutters.   With the game being played before a packed house at East Greenwich High School, Ocean State Health and Fitness jumped out to a fast start paced by a hot shooting and fast-break attack.   Led by the shooting of Kyle Matus and Quinn Sullivan, the nets were sizzling and the crowd was abuzz. With Ross Dean playing shutdown defense and Jake Batista ruling the backboards, the Ocean State Health team had a comfortable lead at the half.   During the second half, Harris Blinds made a big comeback to cut the lead to seven. Martin Luther King Jr. Day: In honor of MLK Jr., schools, government offices and banks are closed, as is the EG Free Library. Most retail stores will be open. King was born on Jan. 15, 1929, in Atlanta. According to Wikipedia, King “led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in 1957, serving as its first president. EGBA MLK Tourney: Day 3

Sunday was the big elimination day ... most of the teams that play on Monday will be in championship games.

The East Greenwich Basketball Association's second-annual Martin Luther King Jr. Tournament started Friday night with 107 teams and finishes on Monday — MLK Day itself. EG Patch caught up with the action at East Greenwich High School this afternoon, getting photos and video from 11 year old boys and 10 year old girls. Games have been taking place at East Greenwich High School, Cole Middle School and Rocky Hill School. With a double-elimination format, that makes for one heck of a lot of basketball! MLK Basketball Tourney continues: The East Greenwich Basketball Association’s 4-day tournament started with four games at Cole Middle School last night. Today it goes into full swing at three locations: Cole, EGHS and Rocky Hill School. With more than 100 teams participating, that’s A LOT of hoops! Check in to EG Patch for updates, photos and videos as the tournament continues. Transfer Station is open: There’s nothing like a trip to the transfer station to make you feel like a homeowner. EG Patch Office Hours: I’ll be at Panera this morning from 8 to 10:30. If you don’t see me at one of the tables, check the counter in the back. That’s a great spot to find a plug! Big Band concert: Greenwich Bay Manor assisted living complex features live music and refreshments this afternoon from 2 to 3 p.m. If you are interested in attending this free event, call 885-3334. Home games: Boys Basketball against Middletown at East Greenwich High School. Varsity plays at 7 p.m., junior varsity at 5:15. EGBA Fifth Grade Girls Win Cranston Tourney

This coming weekend, the EGBA hosts the second-annual MLK Jr. tournament — this year with 105 teams participating.

The fifth grade girls EGBA basketball travel team won the CLCF tournament this weekend in Cranston, beating Coventry 20-2 and South Kingstown 18-16 to get to the final against Cranston (CLCF). In that game, they won decisively, 36-8. The East Greenwich Basketball Association hosts the second-annual MLK Jr. Weekend Tournament this weekend for both girls and boys ages 8 to 14. Games will be played at EGHS, Cole Middle School and Rocky Hill School. Teams from Rhode Island and Massachusetts are playing — 105 teams signed up (up from 85 last year). That comes out to 1,200 players.

EG Basketball Association Gears Up For New Season

More than 600 children and 80 adult men have registered to take part in the season that starts Nov. 5.

The East Greenwich Basketball Association starts play on Saturday, Nov. 5. Only in its second year, EGBA has already attracted 700 players - 620 kids from kindergarten and tenth grade as well as 80 players in a new league for over-35 men. Earlier this month, the league held a coaches clinic where 70 East Greenwich  parent-coaches were given the opportunity to hear from 2 guest speakers. Chris Cobain - EGHS athletic director and former head basketball coach at EWG - spent an hour going through helpful tips for coaching youth basketball including age-appropriate drills.
