Soccer Standout Skylar LeBlanc To Play For Northeastern

The EGHS senior was named to both the first team All State in Rhode Island and the All New England Team.

Skylar LeBlanc loves soccer – the speed of it, the teamwork of it, the fluidity of it. And it shows. The EG senior has signed to play with Division 1 Northeastern in the fall. That's something major for relatively small East Greenwich.  Skylar has started for EGHS since she was a freshman, playing outside back/midfielder. She led her team in scoring her sophomore and junior years. She earned three consecutive Rhode Island Coaches Second Team All Division nods (2009-2011) before leading East Greenwich to an appearance in the state championship her senior year and being named to the First Team All-State and NSCAA All-American Team. She has also played for the Scorpions Soccer Association club squad, which was a back-to-back Elite Clubs …

BB Gun Found At High School

Student who reported seeing a BB gun on the floor in boys bathroom is allegedly the same person who left it there.

Supt. Victor Mercurio said a student was removed from East Greenwich High School Thursday morning after allegedly leaving a BB gun on the floor of one of the boys bathrooms there. Mercurio said the boy, a junior, went to Asst. Principal Tim Chase at 7:45 Thursday morning to report seeing a BB gun on the floor in the bathroom closest to the cafeteria.  "The student who reported it was in fact the individual who put it there. He admitted it," Mercurio said. "Police were called in. The student was removed from the building."  It's unclear why the student left the gun there. According to Mercurio, the gun resembled a handgun. Police said they were still investigating but Mercurio said he anticipated the boy would be arrested for the offense. …

A Ticket To Give

EGHS student Paige Smith is entered to win a trip to distribute TOMS shoes to children in need.

I first heard of TOMS when I was in 7th grade and was casually flipping through a magazine in the dentist’s office. I remember that it was an interview with the company’s fearless founder, Blake Mycoskie. It seemed interesting enough, so I read on. At the conclusion of that article, Blake’s unwavering passion to improve the lives of others not only touched me immensely, but inspired me to want to do the same. And it all starts with shoes. TOMS shoes has a revolutionary business model, around the theme of One for One. This essentially means that for every pair of shoes purchased, a pair is given to a child in need. This immediately captured my enthusiasm, and encouraged me to purchase my own pair of TOMS. As I wore that first pair until …

EGHS Now Has A Real Avenger

The gift from the Class of 2012 – a nearly life-size knight on a horse – has been delivered and is just inside the gates of Carcieri Field awaiting its permanent placement.

It's sitting just inside the gates of Carcieri Field, a 600-pound, 11-foot-tall statue of an Avenger on a rearing horse – the gift of the Class of 2012.  The class recalled by their advisors at graduation last June as being larger than life has left a gift that will ensure they will not soon be forgotten. The metal statue came from Wynn Betts in Colorado. It was sent to Texas to have the Avenger welded in place and then driven across country in a U-Haul. It arrived in January. "I feel this was the perfect gift for our Class of 2012 to give to the school," said Chris Millman, class treasurer, via email. "By our senior year, we truly embodied the school spirit of true Avengers. It is symbolic for the growth and ability that all students …

'Fiddler On The Roof' This Weekend At EGHS!

There are shows Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 1 and 7 p.m.

They aren't using the old barn out back, but kids and some adults at East Greenwich High School are putting on a show this weekend – Fiddler on the Roof. Come see the more than 75 students who are part of this production.  Here's what Wikipedia says about the musical: Fiddler on the Roof is a musical with music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and book by Joseph Stein, set in Tsarist Russia in 1905. It is based on Tevye and his Daughters (or Tevye the Milkman and Other Tales) by Sholem Aleichem. The story centers on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his family and Jewish religious traditions while outside influences encroach upon their lives. He must cope both with the strong-willed actions of his …

EGHS Supports Chris Herren With Purple Out

Former NBA player will speak at EGHS today about Project Purple, his anti-substance abuse organization.

Chris Herren is the definition of motivation and recovery, a fact with which he"ll share at EGHS today when he talks to the kids about his initiative Project Purple. Herren battled many addictions in his early life, and founded Project Purple after he entered recovery. His initiative helps individuals and their families who are struggling with addiction, as he once did. In the typical EGHS welcoming nature, the girls and boys basketball teams are hosting Purple Outs. All supporters are encouraged to wear purple, to support Chris Herren and his organization. It starts with the the boys JV team against Warwick Vets, at 3:30, and then continues with the boys Varsity teams, also against Vets, at 5. There will be a half-court shooting contest …

Chris Herren isn't doing this for attention, he's doing it so kids don't make the same mistakes that he did. He actually seems uncomfortable with all the attention. What's wrong with the guy wanting to turn the negatives of his life into positivity for young kids? A lot of former junkies wouldn't have the courage to talk about their experiences. He's not being praised for being a good person his …   more ›

[VIDEO] Islanders Capitalize on Avenger Mistakes

Middletown takes advantage of two turnovers by East Greenwich in the second half to take the Division III Super Bowl 33-21.

EAST GREENWICH – Middletown capitalized on a pair of East Greenwich turnovers early in the second half to score 14 points and salt away a Division III Super Bowl victory, 33-21. The Islanders had a 19-7 lead with 1:28 left in the first half, but EG’s Andrew Miner ran a picture perfect two-minute, no huddle offense to score in about 60 seconds. The Avengers went into the break trailing 19-14 as a result. However, Middletown held the Avengers to a three-and-out on their initial possession of the second half. East Greenwich limited Middletown to six plays on their drive, but Alex Cleary couldn’t handle a punt, and the Islanders took over on EG’s 33-yard line. Shemar Vincent recovered for Middletown. It took Middletown seven plays, but …

Avengers Headed To Super Bowl; Beat Quakers 25-13

EG will play Middletown in the D III championship game Sunday afternoon at Carcieri Field.

The East Greenwich Avengers came out strong Wednesday night against the Moses Brown Quakers at Carcieri Field, and stayed in front the entire game, winning 25-13 and a berth in the Super Bowl Sunday. The Avengers haven't been in a Super Bowl since 2006. They will play Middletown, the only team that's beaten EG this season. Middletown beat Narragansett 34-14 in their semi-final contest. The Avengers dominated the first half, with a touchdown by Carney Crawford (no extra point) in the first quarter and a TD by Meran Topalian in the second quarter. Off a fumble by Moses Brown with 2 minutes left in the half, Alex Cleary scored a touchdown (no extra point).  The Quakers got on the scoreboard at the end of the second quarter, with a touchdown …
