A man and a woman are transported to area hospitals, one with potentially serious injuries.
Two pedestrians were struck in a hit-and-run accident on Main Street Tuesday night, one of whom was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital with what appeared to be a serious head injury. Rescue workers arrived at 162 Main St., in front of the Greenwich Hotel, just before midnight after a 911 call reporting a pedestrian hit by a car. Fire and rescue personnel actually found two victims at the scene — a 40-year-old woman with a lower leg injury, and a 49-year-old man, who was unconscious and looked to have a serious head injury, according to EG Fire Chief Peter Henrikson. The car that hit the two had fled the scene, Henrikson said. The man was taken to Rhode Island Hospital and the woman was transported to Kent County Hospital. Officials are not …

What to love and hate about living in East Greenwich this week.
RANT: With so much to be grateful for this season – a warm home and food on the table (knowing many have lost it all), the election finally over (well, abated for at least one year) the kids’ cats are on sabbatical from peeing on our beds (gross), narwhals (because if they exist, maybe unicorns do too), the return of the East Greenwich Hill and Harbor Turkey Trot, video games (because you can’t, scratch that, shouldn’t shoot stupid people in real life), the return of Jiggers, the opening of Silver Spoon Bakery (though my thighs aren’t quite as appreciative of that one), the survival of The Village Café, the reopening of the Odeum, our troops and anyone in any job that puts their life on the line, my dishwasher (or, more to the point, …

Verification could eliminate the land from consideration.
Fire Chief Peter Henrikson told the Fire District Commissioners at their meeting Thursday night a state historian and archeologist said land at the southwest corner of Post Road and Cedar Avenue may be a Native American burial ground. Henrikson said that discussion took up about three-fourths of a meeting held with the state Department of Transportation. He and Commissioner Steve Bartlett met with the DOT at the end of March to discuss whether the state-owned land could be acquired and if the EG Fire District could be a single-source bidder. Henrikson had proposed a long-range plan to relocate the independent fire district's 100-year-old Main Street station, which he said is no longer the best location as the department’s work has …

Kristen Henrikson says she was unjustly passed over for a fire fighter job
The wife of EG Fire Chief Peter Henrikson has filed suit against the Fire District, former Fire Chief John McKenna and the fire fighters union, arguing that she was discriminated against when she was not offered a fire fighter’s position in 2009. Kristen Henrikson is chief administrative clerk for the Fire District and reports to the Fire Commissioners, an elected body. She has worked for the district for 14 years. “The suit was initiated before her husband became chief,” said Bill Conley, the lawyer representing Henrikson. Chief Henrikson said only, “It’s an issue between her and the Fire District.” According to the complaint, which was filed in federal District Court Aug. 23, former Chief McKenna had posted the job of fire marshal to all…

Unlike a large fire at the complex in Feb. 2010, this fire was confined to a single apartment.
A fire Saturday evening at the Trafalgar East apartment complex on Post Road damaged one apartment and sent one person to the hospital, according to EG Fire Chief Peter Henrikson. The call came in at 6:46 p.m. The fire was in an apartment on the first floor of the last building in the complex. According to Henrikson, smoke from the fire reached the smoke detector in the common hallway, activating the fire alarm. The alarm alerted the East Greenwich Fire District and several occupants of the building. The person who lived in the apartment with the fire, however, was still inside the apartment when fire fighters arrived. Fire fighters got the person out and Warwick rescue to the person to Rhode Island Hospital. The fire was contained to that…
