During the game Tuesday, EG’s offense dominated through the first quarter with goals by Captain Matt Cruise (2), Ryan Trinque (2), Collin Waitkun, and Captain Connor Finn. The Avengers continued with aggressive play through the second quarter with goals by Captain Sam Feinberg, Ben Contreras, Jack Payette, Waitkun (2), Chris Wright, and another by Trinque leaving the score 13-0 at halftime. EG continues strong performance with 5-0 division record, 5-2 overall
The Avengers kicked off last week in a home game against the Division I North Kingstown Skippers. Consistent with their history of slow starts, EG had only three goals in the first half of the game, one from Colin Waitkun, followed by two from Captain Sam Feinberg. North Kingstown countered with six goals, two each from John Bishara and Steven Fallon, one each by Colin Vincent and Captain Aaron Binek. The third quarter saw three goals by the Avengers (Colin Bernier, Captain Matt Cruise, Ryan Trinque) and three from the Skippers (Fallon, Captain Kevin McDermott, Vincent). The Avenger’s offense came to life in the fourth quarter with three unanswered goals by Ben Contreras, Feinberg, and Trinque leaving the score 9-9 as the clock ran out…

Narragansett uses a 25-0 run over the end of the first and the start of the second to beat the Avengers 54-48.
PROVIDENCE – With a decisive 10-minute, 25-0 run, Narragansett took a lead in the second half it wouldn’t surrender against East Greenwich en route to a 54-48 win Sunday in the quarterfinals of the Division II girls’ playoffs. Senior Maggie Salomone led the Mariners with 23 points, including a pair of 3s and two free throws during Narragansett’s run. Salomone chipped in three steals as well. Her play at the end of the first half helped start the Mariners run, which stretched from two minutes remaining in the first half to 8:26 remaining in the second half. During that time frame, the Mariners repeatedly turned over the Avengers, who also went cold from long range after six first half 3-pointers. East Greenwich didn’t hit a 3 in the second …

Narragansett can’t dig itself out from an 18-0 deficit at the half and falls 24-14 to the East Greenwich Avengers.
NARRAGANSETT – East Greenwich’s Andrew Miner had three touchdown passes and was named offensive MVP in a 24-14 win for the Avengers on Thanksgiving Day at Narragansett High School. The Avengers (9-1, 7-1 Division III) took a 18-0 lead in the first half and never looked back. Although the Mariners (5-5, 4-4 Division III) made a run in the second half, they never came within a possession of East Greenwich. Junior Carney Crawford scored the first touchdown for the Avengers, getting six yards on a pitch with 4:41 left in the first quarter. The teams then traded stalled drives and turnovers, until the final four minutes of the second quarter. With 2:35 left in the first half, Miner completed a four-yard strike to senior Alexander Cleary, …

The Rebels will be favored for the first time in a while in a football game, and the Mariners have a possible playoff preview with East Greenwich.
Thanksgiving means many things to many different people, and for a large portion of the community, it’ll be a day dominated by football. The Narragansett Mariners will host the East Greenwich Avengers, while the South Kingstown Rebels travel to North Kingstown to face the Skippers. It’s the traditional rivalry game for both teams. Here are our capsule previews for both. All statistics from Rhode Island High School Sports and the RIIL. NARRAGANSETT VS. EAST GREENWICH The Mariners (5-4, 4-3 Division III) host the Avengers (8-1, 6-1 Division III) at 10 a.m. at Narragansett High School. Although both teams are playoff bound, the Thanksgiving showdown won’t factor into this at all. The seedings for the Division III playoffs are already set, …

What to love and heat about living in East Greenwich this week.
RAVE: Let’s talk about grinding for a minute. Not the daily grind (that’s just too depressing to discuss), but the style of dancing (please note that I am making air quotes around the word dancing) that has been banned from many schools, including our own high school. If you haven’t seen this kind of action before, use your imagination. Actually, scratch that. Just think vertical lap dance. I’m happy to say I haven’t had to deal with this too much since my kids, despite being newly minted teenagers, still don’t seem to have reached a point where they differentiate between the sexes. In fact, I think they might be even more grossed out than I am by the concept of grinding. For now. Because living with a teenager is like living with a pod …

East Greenwich completes a perfect Division II season with a 10-4 win in the title game vs. South Kingstown.
PROVIDENCE – Except for a brief stretch in the second quarter, East Greenwich controlled all of a 10-4 win in the Division II boys’ lacrosse title game against South Kingstown at Rhode Island College Whether the Rebels were rattled or the pressure from the Avengers was just too intense, South Kingstown struggled to pass well or play under control. In contrast, East Greenwich capitalized on the South Kingstown penalties, and dominated time of possession. The Avengers scored the games first three goals, and kept the Rebels from scoring until eight minutes into the second quarter. South Kingstown briefly made a game of it at that point, scoring again with 1:47 left in the first half. The Rebels’ lone stretch of better play than the Avengers …

What to love and loathe about living in East Greenwich this week.
RANT: I never would have taken the Town Council for Dancing With the Stars hopefuls, but they are definitely executing some fancy footwork with this year’s budget. As reported on this site a few days ago, the council voted 4-0 to increase the budgeted tax collection percentage from 98 percent to 99 percent, giving an instant $400,000 top up to the 2013 budget. Huh? I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that regardless of how one feels about taxes, if we have a tax rate that we have to pay, then dammit, everyone else better be paying their dues as well. However, this does not seem to always be the case. The powers know this from experience and therefore factor this shortfall into their anticipated revenue. So why they think simply stating …

For third year in a row, the website give EG schools the top spot.
When GoLocalProv debuted its best schools story in 2010, East Greenwich was on top. It was again in 2011, and it goes for a three-peat this top ranking again in their story published yesterday. GoLocal said it employs a formula developed at Babson College to assess and weight each school's latest NECAP and SAT scores, plus per-pupil funding, student-teacher ratios, and graduation rates. The article cites good test scores, both NECAP and SAT, and what it said is a lower-than-average per-pupil expenditure. The figure they use — $14,086 — could not be verified by Supt. Victor Mercurio in an interview Tuesday. He said GoLocal may have calculated special education spending into the total. EG charges $10,500 to out-of-district students, he said…
