Four Democrats, three Republicans and one independent signed up to run for School Committee. Now we wait to see if they all submit the required signatures.
Eight candidates have signed up to run for School Committee – eight. For three seats. It’s hard to complain about apathy this election year, at least on the school side. (The Town Council race is less rosy picture, with five Republicans but no Democrats running.) Here’s a rundown of the candidates in alphabetical order. They must collect the signatures of at least 50 registered East Greenwich voters by 4 p.m. July 13 to earn a spot on the ballot. If all four Democrats submit enough signatures, there will be a primary Sept. 11 to narrow the field to three. Republicans field a full slate for Council and School Committee; Democrats offer no candidates for Council, four for School Committee.
The Democrats cup runneth over for School Committee, with four candidates for three seats, while they failed to field a single candidate for Town Council's five available seats. Republicans, meanwhile, have a full slate of five candidates for council, two candidates for School Committee and one candidate for Town Moderator. By 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, a total of 15 people had filed to run for town offices – 8 Republicans, 4 Democrats, 1 Libertarian, 1 Moderate, and 1 independent.
