Driver In Fatal Rt. 4 Crash Pleads Guilty To 2 Traffic Violations

State police say there was no evidence of reckless conduct on Sept. 28 when Benjamin Servideo's car rear-ended Sullynette Sanchez's car, killing her and the baby she was carrying.

The driver in a fatal crash on Route 4 in East Greenwich on Sept. 29, 2012, pleaded guilty to two traffic violations Thursday morning at the R.I. Traffic Tribunal in Cranston.  Benjamin Servideo, 24, of Newport, will be sentenced on Feb. 26 for failing to respond to conditions requiring reduced speed and failing to maintain control of his car. A third violation, failing to maintain adequate space between vehicles, was dropped. Servideo's car rear-ended the car driven by Sullynette Sanchez, 23, of Providence, who was 8 months pregnant. Sanchez died on the way to the hospital. Her baby, a boy, was born afterwards but only lived for two weeks. Asst. I've lived on Ives Road for 17 years and previously visited my parents here for 11 years before that. There have always been people speeding and the police have never really done anything about it unless we call them. Then they sit in their car and maybe stop a few of them. Who knows if they really get tickets. One officer literally told me, but they are residents here and hate it when we stop …   more ›

VM - you seem to have some knowledge of these events but let me enlighten you a little more. At the time of the accident, the police did not know the two vehicles were together, didn't know Pat spent all afternoon prepping for the barnfire, didn't know about the moonshine he brought back from a recent visit down south and had they known that, they WOULD have handled Pat differently. Instead, he …   more ›

Mike Ruggieri Remembered As ‘Gentle Giant’ With Big Heart

Dave Ruggieri’s eulogy for his oldest son — delivered by a friend — also contained a plea that young people learn from the tragic accident Sunday that killed two.

Michael D. Ruggieri — beloved son, big brother, truck enthusiast, “teddy bear” — was buried Friday at Quidnessett Memorial Cemetery in North Kingstown, after a packed funeral at St. Bernard Catholic Church on Tower Hill Road. The 19-year-old was, according to his dad, David, “really beginning to come into his own” these last few months. He died early Sunday morning when the truck he was riding in overturned on the narrow, winding Shippeetown Road in East Greenwich. Madeline Healey, 18, was also killed that morning. The driver of the truck, Nicholas Whiteley, 21, remains in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital. The fourth person in the truck that fateful morning, Christopher Mortin, 19, was treated at the hospital and released the …
