Artifacts At Possible New Fire Station Site? EGFD Votes To Keep Studying

An initial study of the land at Post Road and Cedar Avenue shows the possibility of "significant" native American artifacts; new study to cost up to $22,000.

The EG Fire District Board of Commissioners voted Thursday to spend up to $22,000 on a "phase two" study of the land at Post Road and Cedar Avenue they hope will be the site of a new fire station. The first study, done by digging holes, turned up some items that could point to the site having "significant" Native American artifacts. Further archaeological studies will need to be done before land can be permitted for development.  The second study involves digging trenches with a backhoe. The Fire District is looking at the parcel of land to build a replacement of Station 1, the Main Street fire station. Fire Chief Proposes Relocating Downtown Station

Chief Henrikson tells Fire Commissioners the town needs a station more centrally located.

Fire Chief Peter Henrikson outlined the reasons it may be time to move the downtown fire station during a meeting of the Fire Commissioners Thursday night. Henrikson raised the issue now, he said, because of the unexpected availability of the property at the southwest corner of Post Road and Cedar Avenue, which may be for sale by the state. While many people probably still think fire fighters spend most of their time fighting actual fires. Better building techniques and materials, sprinklers, and tougher fire codes have reduced fire calls, while EMS runs have steadily increased. In 2011 East Greenwich firefighters were called out 2,800 times. About 30 percent of those calls were fire related, while 70 percent were EMS responses.   The …
