Ballot question on merging Fire District with Town approved.
Voters in East Greenwich returned all incumbents to office, with the five Republican Town Council members and School Committee Chair Deidre Gifford winning re-election. Newcomers Carolyn Mark and Clark Smith also won seats on the School Committee. Republican Anthony Giarrusso was leading the R.I. House Dist. 30 race by 36 votes over Democrat Mark Schwager, with more than 500 mail ballots and the portion of West Greenwich that belongs to Dist. 30 still uncounted. Giarrusso got 2,798 votes in East Greenwich and Schwager got 2,762. Kevin McDonough, an independent, got 755 votes. Ballot Question 8, a nonbinding referendum asking if the EG Fire District should be merged with the Town of EG, was approved 3,994 to 2,120. For Town Council, …

The teachers union cites failure of the schools to notify about negotiating a new contract, paving the way for a one-year contract extension.
Before contract negotiations have even begun on a new teachers contract — the existing one expires July 30 — the two sides are at loggerheads over the breach of a clause in the contract that the union says extends their contract one year. According to Supt. Victor Mercurio, union officials told him earlier this month that since they were not notified in writing about the school department’s desire to negotiate a new contract, the existing contract would be renewed for an additional year. Although that language does exist in the contract between the teachers and the school department, that is not how school officials see it. “We were surprised and disappointed,” said School Committee Chair Deidre Gifford. “There’s no reason why they can’t …

The School Committee chairwoman stands by panel’s new “cold cheese sandwich” policy, but says the school department needs to do a better job informing parents on the payment protocol.
The School Committee’s decision last Tuesday to limit students to a cold cheese sandwich lunch after they have already received three hot lunches with no money on account has pointed up some confusion surrounding the prepay lunch program. Some parents (including this reporter) were completely unaware that all school children from first grade through high school are able to, essentially, “charge” lunch. According to school officials, students are given an i.d. number that stays with them through their school years. At lunchtime, if they choose to buy lunch, they punch in their number on a key pad that sits next to the cashier. Then they either pay for their lunch with cash or the cost of lunch is deducted from money a parent has deposited …

Just some points to consider: 1. Maybe they created a separate Fire District to keep the Council out of the Fire business 2. Have the Council focus on the Town's issues before they worry about a well run, proven in its annual audit, Fire District 3. The Town is REALLY just looking at the savings the Fire District has so they can use it to pay off the HUGE debt the Council has put the Town in: 2 …   more ›
