Cole's Principal Meyer Earns Golden Apple Award

She is the first school administrator to be so honored.

She thought she was coming to the science lab because of some problem, but when Cole Middle School Principal Alexis Meyer stepped into the classroom, a loud chorus of "Surprise!" greeted her. Meyer was the latest recipient of the Channel 10/ Department of Education Golden Apple Award. This is the first time the award has been given to a school administrator – usual recipients are teachers. Education Commissioner Deborah Gist and Channel 10's Patrice Wood were on hand for the occassion, as was Supt. Victor Mercurio and School Committee members David Green and Mary Ellen Winters. EGHS Teacher Fran Healy Awarded 'Golden Apple'

The special education teacher was nominated by one of her students.

When Patrice Wood from Channel 10 arrived at her classroom last week, East Greenwich special education teacher Fran Healy assumed she was there for someone else. "I was completely surprised," Healy said later. Wood was there to give Healy a Golden Apple Award for excellence in teaching. Healy was a little embarrassed by the hoopla, saying the award should go to all her fellow teachers.  But there was one aspect of the award that really pleased her – the nomination came from one of her students.  Julia Slavin joined Healy's class last year. Initially, she was less than a model student.  "I had a major attendence problem," Slavin admitted. "She went out of her way to make sure I got to school," Slavin said of Healy.
