It's unclear whether Fire District Commissioners will support the legislation.
The next chess piece has been moved: legislation to abolish the East Greenwich Fire District and establish a town fire department was submitted to the General Assembly last week. State Sen. Dawson Hodgson (R-N.K., E.G., S.K., Narr.) and Lou Raptakis (D-Coventry, EG) introduced bill S-0739 on Wednesday, March 13. The intro of the bill – which was referred to the Senate Finance Committee – reads, "Authorizing the Town of East Greenwich to acquire the property, assets and personnel of the East Greenwich Fire District." State Rep. Anthony Giarrusso (R-E.G.) has also submitted a EGFD bill. According to Chuck Newton of the House Minority Office (and also the chair of the EG GOP), the bill is "in the hands of the Clerk of the House" and should …

News from the General Assembly as it relates to East Greenwich.
The state Senate approved legislation last Tuesday to amend a new reporting requirement on alcohol sales in the state. The bill was introduced by Sen. Leonidas Raptakis (D-Dist. 33, Coventry) and now goes to the House of Representatives for consideration. Raptakis represents part of western East Greenwich as well as part of West Greenwich. Raptakis decried the reporting requirement – which was passed last session. He said restaurant and bar owners received notification from the Division of Taxation early in January that they had until Feb. 1 to provide this new report, a detailed two-page form that requires businesses to compile their total alcoholic beverage sales for the previous year. Currently, restaurants and bars have to file a …

Sasse said Thursday the run is something he's "thinking about."
East Greenwich resident Gary Sasse confirmed Thursday he is considering running for the state representative District 30 seat now held by Bob Watson. Watson announced last week he would not run for re-election. When asked if he was thinking about running, Sasse said, "Yes, it's something I'm thinking about." This would be Sasse's first run for public office, but not his first time in the public eye. He was director of the state Department of Administration and the Department of Revenue for several years under Gov. Donald Carcieri. Before that, he ran the Rhode Island Public Expenditure Council for nearly 30 years. Currently, Sasse is the director of the Bryant Institute for Public Leadership at Bryant University. He also has a consulting …

EG Republican Town Committee musters as election season begins.
Former gubernatorial hopeful John Robitaille pointed it out during a speech to local GOP town committee members last Thursday night at Caprice: East Greenwich is home base for the R.I. Republican party. Counting up EG’s local and state elected officials, it’s hard not to agree. In a state where Democrats hold most of the power, Republicans lay claim to all three state legislator posts, all five Town Council seats, and six out of seven School Committee positions in East Greenwich. Two nights after hosting a visit by Callista Gingrich, the EG Republican Town Committee gathered last Thursday evening to kick off the election season. With the primary just days away, they held a straw poll, charging $1 per “vote.” But, in this election anyway, …

The wife of presidential candidate Newt Gingrich joined some R.I. Republicans for dinner at Caprice on Main Street.
East Greenwich got a bit of presidential primary glow Tuesday night, when the EG GOP played host to Callista Gingrich, wife of presidential candidate Newt Gingrich, at Caprice on Main Street. The faithful who gathered were largely Gingrich true believers, even as the former Speaker of the House has moved into footnote territory in terms of the 2012 election. “My problem is that I’m so much for Newt, I can’t imagine why he’s not resonating more around the country,” said Alexandra Mark, of Newport, in frustration. “When he talks, I listen.” According to Westerly Town Councilman Caswell Cooke, originally, Newt Gingrich was going to make a swing through Rhode Island. But, Cooke said, after Rick Santorum got out of the race last week, plans …
