Graffiti On Graffiti (Grrrr!) & A Weather Rave (Prayer!)

What to love and loathe about living in East Greenwich this week.

RANT: I take it back. My family strolled down to London Bridge Tunnel the other day to take in the art work before heading over to Searles (natch) and viola!, instead of the fantastic art that everyone labored so hard and imaginatively on the previous week, there are sprayings of obscenity over everything. OK, I know there are worse crimes in the world than what’s essentially graffiti over graffiti, but the first is urban creative writing an the latter is urban blight. I can’t repeat the phrases painted as this is a family paper but that is my point – this is also a family town. We should be better than this. Terrible Trains & Great Graffiti

What to love and loathe about living in East Greenwich this week.

RANT: Anyone who knows me knows that I love trains. And as much as I would welcome a little Beam-me-up-Scottie teleportation, I think I would still take the occasional train journey. The world flows past in a way that is not possible in an airplane. Or a car, for that matter. When you are driving yourself, you have to pay attention (well, that’s the assumption anyway), so you can’t gaze whimsically at the landscape, letting whatever catch your eye (I once saw a field full of Day Glo turkeys). Nor does being a passenger do it – there is something so retro about being on a train. I even love train stations. Reading the destination board is a step back in time to the road not taken, the possibility of a journey, the promise of an adventure, …

Great Graffiti Contest: The East Greenwich Housing Authority and the Town of East Greenwich are sponsoring the annual Great Graffiti Contest today from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at London and Duke streets. The event is free and open to the public (rain date is Sunday Aug. 5). Join in, or come as a spectator – either way, it’s a great event! Annual Graffiti Contest Is Back

The popular EG Housing Authority-sponsored event will take place Saturday, Aug. 4.

The East Greenwich Housing Authority (EGHA) and the Town of East Greenwich are sponsoring the annual Great Graffiti Contest on Saturday, Aug. 4, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the corner of London and Duke Streets. The event is free and open to the public. (Rain date is Sunday Aug. 5.) Entrants can paint whatever they like in assigned sections of the pedestrian walkway passing below the Amtrak rail line. Registered participants age 11 and older are provided kits containing spray paint, face masks, and gloves, although some people like to bring their own paint. Artists under age 11 are provided with chalk and finger paints. The painters and the public will vote for their favorite pieces in the junior and senior categories. Voting will close …
