Two and a half years after the EG School Committee’s attempt to outsource custodians, both sides said negotiations to extend the contract an additional two years this fall were smooth and amicable, with union members getting a 2 percent raise for the remainder of this fiscal year, and for each of the next two years. Under this new contract, the “sick bank” was abolished; instead union members will now buy temporary disability insurance (TDI). The money will be deducted from their paychecks. “It was very genial,” said School Committee Chair David Green of the negotiations. “The process was fine, everyone was great,” said union representative Joe Machon, an electrician with the district. More than a year after the original parish house was torn down, the congregation is back on Kenyon Avenue.
The congregation of Westminster Unitarian Church is back on Kenyon Avenue, with the recent completion of its new parish hall. The old parish house was razed in September 2010 and replaced at a cost of about $2.2 million, according to church officials. During construction the congregation met at a church in Coventry. The old house building, built around 1850, needed serious repairs and presented safety concerns, said Westminster Church President, Abby Addington-May. "Church members looked at the cost analysis of repairing the old building and building a new one," said Addington-May. "It just made sense to build something new." Brewster Thornton, architects from Providence, designed the building with a focus on using "green" materials. …

As part of “Green Week,” Rocky Hill's high school turned off all lights and technology for a full day.
On any given day, when you walk into Rocky Hill's high school, you are greeted with a flatscreen TV displaying daily announcements as well as pictures and videos of recent school events. Projectors show class notes and presentations and students take notes on their laptops. One day last week, however, the experience was quite different as the school went off the grid. Almost all the lights in the building were off and laptops or projectors were off limits. The Defenders, a student club that advocates environmentally-friendly activities, helped to organize “Green Week.” The week was an effort to increase awareness of the human impact on the environment and to demonstrate ways to lessen that impact. “Some of the teachers had a really hard …
