EGHS Senior Named Prudential Top Youth Volunteer

Marina Palumbo earned more than $9,000 to help the “restavek” children of Haiti go to school.

Marina Palumbo first heard about Haiti and the plight of its restavek children on Anderson Cooper 360 when she was a freshman at East Greenwich High School – two more than a year before the earthquake that brought Haiti centerstage. Restavek children in Haiti go to work for families with more money, but they often don’t get enough food, much less a chance to go to school. Palumbo decided to try to do something about it. A chance encounter at her church with members of Cross International set her on a path to raising money for restavek children to be able to attend school. “The only hope they have is school,” said Palumbo recently. “My aunt’s an artist, and she helped me.” They came up with a necklace, made simply and cheaply. EGHS senior heads to Haiti

Caitlin Indermaur will be part of a small group of photographers who will be in the town of Jacmel for eight days.

Caitlin Indermaur, 17, is a senior at EGHS. On Tuesday, she's traveling to Haiti for eight days. Caitlin is going to Haiti with her senior project mentor, Boston photographer Barbara Peacock, and others to take pictures and teach art classes. When asked by Peacock to go on the trip, she jumped at the opportunity. “I’m interested in humanitarian work and film and photography,” she said. “This is something I’ve always wanted to do. I’m interested in film too. I’m hopefully doing a documentary there too.” As for her parents, they are nervous, she said, but they understand how important the trip is to her. Caitlin will attend Clark University in the fall. There she plans to focus on international development and art, following a path she …
