EG Fire Chief Says Warwick Dropped Ball On Dispatch

Chief Henrikson says Warwick should have just come out and said they weren't interested instead of stringing the EGFD on.

The Warwick Fire Department was “weeks” away from taking over EG fire dispatch when the whole plan came to a halt, said Fire Chief Peter Henrikson in an interview Tuesday. Henrikson had a pile of papers to document what took since 2009 to transfer East Greenwich fire dispatch duties to Warwick because the EGFD has come under fire lately for spending $147,000 on equipment for both EG and Warwick that is now not needed. East Greenwich Fire Commissioners voted to end dispatch consolidation talks with Warwick at their meeting on Jan. 24. Henrikson said the impetus for moving dispatch to Warwick was to free up a firefighter from doing dispatch. Paid firefighters covering dispatch dates back to the1980s. A internal study from 1990 recommended …

Where in Potowomut is there space? Ives is all owned land. Not sure the deed from Gaddard would allow one in the park. The deed doesn't even allow overhead telephone wires. Knock down the old school and build there is the only place I may see.   more ›

Fire District Meeting Sat. On Moving Station

Chief Henrikson will present his findings at a special morning meeting at New England Tech.

The East Greenwich Fire District will hold a special meeting Saturday at New England Tech so that Chief Peter Henrikson can present his reasons for relocating the Main Street fire station. As outlined in an earlier article, as development in town has shifted south and west, having a station in what is the northeast corner of town is not time efficient. Especially now with so many of the calls having to do with rescue rather than fire, time can make the difference even more between life and death. With the possible availability of the state-owned parcel at Post and Cedar roads, Henrikson has said that now could be the time to contemplate at least beginning such a move. The meeting starts at 10 a.m. Following the presentation, there will be …

Fire Chief Proposes Relocating Downtown Station

Chief Henrikson tells Fire Commissioners the town needs a station more centrally located.

Fire Chief Peter Henrikson outlined the reasons it may be time to move the downtown fire station during a meeting of the Fire Commissioners Thursday night. Henrikson raised the issue now, he said, because of the unexpected availability of the property at the southwest corner of Post Road and Cedar Avenue, which may be for sale by the state. While many people probably still think fire fighters spend most of their time fighting actual fires. Better building techniques and materials, sprinklers, and tougher fire codes have reduced fire calls, while EMS runs have steadily increased. In 2011 East Greenwich firefighters were called out 2,800 times. About 30 percent of those calls were fire related, while 70 percent were EMS responses.   The …

Fire Fighter Union Seeks Dismissal Of Portion Of Henrikson Lawsuit

Fire District files its answer as well.

The East Greenwich Fire Fighters Association, Local 3328, filed a motion to dismiss Tuesday in the lawsuit filed by Kristen Henrikson against the union, individual EG Fire Commissioners, former Fire Chief John McKenna and the Fire District itself, claiming job discrimination. Henrikson is the wife of current Fire Chief Peter Henrikson and works as a clerk for the District. In her lawsuit, Henrikson said that she was discriminated against when she was not offered a fire fighter’s position in 2009. She first filed a complaint with the state Commission of Human Rights, in March 2010. In March 2011, the commission determined there that no probable cause existed to believe that the Fire District had violated state and federal anti-…
