The undefeated Northmen led the game throughout.
In the end, North Smithfield would not be denied a perfect season, beating East Greenwich in the Division III Boys Basketball final 66-55, and improving their unbeaten streak to 24 games. Seniors David Hopkins and Ryan Gavin led scoring for the Avengers, with 18 points and 14 points respectively. The Avengers got to the D III final after a couple of great wins over, first, Mount Hope and then Middletown, after going 14-4 in the regular season. Down by 8 at the half, the Lancers battle back in first round of the playoffs.
The Cole Middle School Boys Basketball team went into the playoffs with a better record, 12-2, than its 8-4 opponent, Ferri Middle School of Johnston, but the Lancers had to fight back from an 8-point deficit at the half to secure their 57-55 win at home in the first round Tuesday. Other coaches might yell and scream at him but he can shoot all day as far as I’m concerned because he doesn’t miss when it counts…
