Two weeks in, our newest state representative communicates with residents of District 30.
Friday, January 18
This is my first communication with District 30 residents since the election. I hope to keep you informed of activities at the General Assembly, but I want to avoid sending you meaningless emails that clog up the system. Look for periodic emails from me, but I promise to keep them to a minimum. In the meantime, we'll work to keep our Facebook page up to date, and you can always tune in to Capitol TV (Channel 15 on Cox, Channel 34 on Verizon) or the House of Representative's Facebook page if you want to keep a closer eye on things. After a break over the Christmas holidays, the General Assembly got down to work January 1. All 75 State Representatives and 38 State Senators were sworn in, and the House and Senate elected leadership for the …

EG’s soon-to-be former state representative Bob Watson talks about his years in the General Assembly and his plans for the future.
Representative Bob Watson looks good, looks healthy. It’s been six months since he entered rehab, a milestone he was happy to note. “Recovery isn’t counted in days and weeks,” he said during an interview at Felicia’s, “it’s counted in months and years.” How long it will take Watson to recover from 20 years in the General Assembly is harder to say. “I’m going to focus on myself and my law practice,” he said, noting he’d spent nearly his entire professional career in the General Assembly. “When I came out of law school, I immediately ran for state Senate.” The seat in 1988 was open and Watson won. He paints an unrecognizable picture of himself as an first term elected official. “As a state senator I was wide-eyed. The learning curve was a …

Original maps had EG split into 4 state Senate districts.
The R.I. Reapportionment Commission approved new maps for the Congressional and state House and Senate districts at a hearing Monday night at the State House. The maps are redrawn every 10 years, following completion of the U.S. Census. There will be an additional hearing to consider minor “pocket” changes Thursday. Votes in favor of the state House and Senate district maps were unanimous; the vote on the U.S. Congressional district was closer, 11-6. “I think it’s a good compromise,” said Commission co-chair Stephen Ucci (D-District 42, Cranston, Johnston). “Again, not everybody’s going to be happy with it. This turned out to be a lot more difficult than I thought it would be.” For East Greenwich, the news was favorable - Senate district…

EG Patch is looking for pictures of houses decked out for October 31.
Nature does a lot of the decorating for us this time of year - what with dead leaves and waning daylight. But Halloween does offer a great opportunity to get your ghost on. If you are one of those people who likes to scare the daylights out of your neighbors every time they walk by (the house on Mawney Street with the witch in the door window does it to me every time!), share it with us. Or maybe you go for more of a pumpkin motif. We'd love to see that too! Send in your photo and the street you live on (exact address is not necessary). We will showcase everyone's shots this weekend. Looking for all the local Halloween goings-on in one spot? Check out our Halloween Page. While you’re there, enter your kid’s costume in the Patch …
