Rants and Raves

Dang Dances And Darn Good DPW

What to love and hate about living in East Greenwich this week.

RANT: First Dodgeball, now parent-child dances and ballgames have been banned. Has the world gone crazy? Or is it just Cranston (if you missed the story, after a year in which they already battled to keep prayer – or at least a prayer banner – in school – the school system nixed all father-daughter dances/mother-son soccer matches in response to an ACLU suit that claimed they were in violation of state gender discrimination laws)? The thing is, I have mixed feelings about similar father/daughter-mother/son events that take place in our own school community. On one hand, they have a sweet nostalgic aura of simpler times that bring to mind town picnics, Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney putting on a play, and going down to the drugstore for a …

Well, well said, Timmy...The world is a different place these days..Like it or not, it is not the place of a few to make choices for the majority..Wether through divorce, death or gender preference, the tide has shifted when it comes to the social world (including childrens activities). Power Outage: Mixed Reactions from EG Residents

While some had an easier time coping with the loss of power, others were hitting their limit

"It was harder than I thought it would be," said Beth Creeden, who's power was finally restored Tuesday night. "The hardest was after the kids went to bed at night and having to read our books by candlelight." After Tropical Storm Irene cut power to more than 5,000 households in East Greenwich Sunday, some residents decided to check into hotels to survive the time without power. Others decided to stick it out at home.  "We may have stayed at a hotel if we had to evacuate; otherwise, if we had to leave we would have stayed with family or friends," said Carson Cambre, who lives in the Hill and Harbor area. Some people expressed frustrations with National Grid and the school system.   “National Grid should be doing a better job. They should …

I think that, because the storm was so slow traveling through, it did much more damage than a regular tropical storm. It seemed like a true hurricane in terms of tree damage and resultant outages.   more ›

The Agony & The Ecstacy: The Powered & The Powerless

Well into Day Four of life after Tropical Storm Irene, some find very-welcome relief, while others hear that power is still days away

For Sally Miranda, of River Farm Drive, it was all about flushing the toilets. After three-and-a-half days without power - which in her case also meant no way to activate the sewer pump - Miranda learned at about 4 Wednesday afternoon that the power was back on in her neighborhood. “The power is on and we can flush all our toilets,” said Miranda soon after she’d arrived home. “So that’s great. Very exciting. All the toilets are flushed.” Meadowbrook Farms School was also back online by Wednesday afternoon, the last of the six EG public schools to regain power. Power came back on at Meadowbrook less than an hour after Supt. Victor Mercurio sent out an email stating that the first day of school would be delayed again - to Tuesday, Sept. 6. …

Kudos to the Patch for being so helpful. A great cloud was lifted when I heard from my friends last night when their power was returned. The kindness of neighbors was mentioned as also helping them get through.   more ›

With Power Still Out In Many Areas, EG Regroups

Power outages delay the start of school and frustrate residents, while some streets have yet to be cleared of downed trees

Town public works employees were in "safety and security" mode yesterday, one day after Tropical Storm Irene blew through, wreaking havoc on trees across East Greenwich. "All my crews have been dispatched," said town Public Works Director Joe Duarte on Monday. "Right now we're in safety and security mode. We're not in clean up mode yet. That will be later this week." For some, the cleanup wasn't moving fast enough. According to Mary MacIntosh, Moosehorn Drive remained closed most of Monday. A crew finally arrived and cleared away enough tree debris to open a single lane. And on Maplewood Drive, a power line remained in the street all day, despite phone calls to National Grid from residents, Kristin Wheeler reported. Residents called police…

Power Slowly Returning; Hundreds of Thousands Still In Dark

About 70,000 residents, along with all hospitals in the state have had electricity restored. National Grid employees are working around the clock to repair the "unprecedented" damage.

More than 270,000 Rhode Islanders are still without power as National Grid crews work furiously to get electricity flowing again. About 600 workers are in the field working to repair the main transmission lines and more than 20 substations — about one-third of the total in the state — that have gone offline, according to Tim Horan, regional president of National Grid, speaking at a press briefing at the Emergency Management Agency in Cranston Monday afternoon. They crews have had some early success, restoring power to all hospitals in the state, along with other "critical customers" — police stations, fire stations and residents on life-support equipment. The company has restored power to about 70,000 residents, knocking the total in the …

Power was restored to this side of Fairmount 12 hours after the storm. However, it's been up and down the last 24 hours with black-outs lasting as long as this morning for about 4 hours. I can only assume that the reason is because of the Hospice and Nursing Home that are on Rhodes Ave (Woonsocket)/Mendon Road (North Smithfield). I'm sure we'll have a couple of more blackouts until things are …   more ›

Video: Potowomut Sunday Afternoon As Irene Blows Out

Despite the large number of trees down on Ives Road, some in the area, including Fat Belly's on Forge Road, didn't loose power, or didn't for long

People were out Sunday afternoon on Ives Road in Potowomut, walking, biking, driving. Trees that had fallen into the road during the strong winds of the morning had been pushed to the side. According to EG Town Manager Bill Sequino, Sandy Point had no beach at all during high tide Sunday morning, with 4 to 5 foot waves. By 5 p.m. the scene was significantly more benign, with one couple even sitting on the rocks enjoying a quiet moment. While many in Potowomut lost power, some were back on by late afternoon. For a map of power outages, visit the National Grid website.

Property Owners May Pay More For Hurricane Damage Despite Insurance

Rhode Island residents may be subject to additional hurricane deductibles

Rhode Island residents whose property is damaged by Hurricane Irene may discover they’ll be paying more for repairs than expected. The Associated Press reports that most homeowner insurance policies include a deductible that’s typically $500 to $1,000, but out-of-pocket expenses for hurricane damages can be much higher. “In 18 states on the East and Gulf coasts, insurers are allowed to include hurricane deductibles in homeowners policies," the AP reported. "These amounts apply only to hurricane-caused damage, and typically range from 1 percent to 5 percent of the insured value of a home. Deductibles may be higher in some coastal areas. For example, a policyholder whose home is insured for $200,000 with a 2 percent hurricane deductible …

The Day After: Surveying Damage, Looking For Electricity

The Harbor area of EG got power back around 4:30 a.m., residents say, but manY remain without.

The sun is shining, the streets have been cleared of larger tree limbs, but many residents of East Greenwich are still without power. If the Emergency Management Agency press conference is to be believed, it may be a while - several days - before power is back on for everyone. Most of Main Street is back on line, as is the Dave's plaza on Division at South County Trail. Last night, Stop & Shop on Frenchtown was open and the Wendy's there had a line of cars curled around the drive back into the main entrance for the drive-thru. At Custom House Coffee this morning, Seth Feder, who lives on Larch Road, recounted his travels from place to place yesterday morning, looking for electricity. After he lost power at home, he went to Felicia's. "I …

Surveying Meadowbrook, Middle Road Areas

Power lines down in the streets and driving is difficult

Power lines are down throught East Greenwich, including at the intersection of Maplewood Drive and Silverwood Drive in the Meadowbrook neighborhood. A tree split in half, leaving the power line lying in the middle of the street. Throughout the afternoon, neighbors walked around surveying the damage. The enitre neighborhood is without power. National Grid is unsure when power will be restored, calling it a “severe outage,” in the Meadowbrook area. "No estimated time can be given," a National Grid service rep said. Downed Power lines are  dangerous and people are urged to stay away from them. As many as 260,000 residences are without power in Rhode Island.     Trees lay partially in the road on Middle and Howland roads. Many have been pushed…

Video: Down By The Water At High Tide Sunday Morning

The general consensus: It could have been worse

Water lapped over Water Street earlier today, during the morning high tide, around 8 a.m. There were a few inches of water in front of Rhode Island Clam and the Harbourside. Down by Norton's Marina, water was knocking on their office doors. The water receded before becoming troublesome for the town's waste water treatment plant, the pump house of which sits below sea level. Still, most on the waterfront won't breathe easy until the evening high tide - at around 8 p.m. - has passed.
