Hill-Top Creamery reopens for the season.
San Juan Capistrano has its swallows, East Greenwich has sleeping bags outside Hill-Top Creamery. The swallows are said to return to the mission at San Juan Capistrano every March 19, while Hill-Top Creamery reopens the third Saturday of March (this year, March 16), prompting the sleeping-bag brigade. This year was no different, with some of the ice cream faithful arriving as early as 3:30 a.m., according to Hill-Top co-owner Cindy Hoernle, looking to be among the first to get ice cream from Hill-Top in 2013. It was chilly, so the Hoernles (Cindy owns the shop with her husband, Ricky) passed out gift certificates and decided to open at 11:30 instead of noon. Longtime employee Brooke MacDonald was on hand, scoop and dipping. Customers …

What we love and loathe about living in East Greenwich this month.
RANT: The recent hoopla over whether certain businesses should receive liquor licenses has left me scratching my head. A coffee shop is ok, but a dessert store isn’t? (In case you are thinking that it makes immense sense as those who over-imbibe at the coffee shop can quickly sober up with a few shots of high octane joe, studies published in Scientific American show that combining large amounts of alcohol and caffeine simultaneously can actually be lethal. So there.) OK, I don’t live with my head in a can. I get that laws can change attitudes and oftentimes, they can be the first step towards a change in mentality and our society’s values. The reality of this hit me on the noggin just last week when my kids and I were on vacation in Las …

Town Council approves liquor license for tenant Silver Spoon Bakery, grants victualing license for ice cream shop across the hall.
In a downtown filled with places to eat dinner, 58 Main Street is posed to become Main Street's dessert capital. The Town Council approved both a liquor license for the four-month-old Silver Spoon Bakery and a victualing license for Lina Piccolina, which wants to open an ice cream shop on the first floor to pair with their consignment shop downstairs. Silver Spoon owners Kelly and Scott Santos told Council members they needed a full liquor license to be able to serve wine and liqueurs to their patrons who come in for cupcakes and macaroons. Originally, they thought they could just apply for a wine-and-beer license but liqueurs required a full license. They said they had no intention of serving beer or hard liquor, but rather were looking …

What to love and hate about living in East Greenwich this week.
RANT: For some, it’s the inexplicable (to my family, anyway) urge to purge the yard of leaves. For others, it’s the sweet words “off-sides” and “corner kick” or eyeing the cornstalks and gourds at the farmer’s market at Goddard. But for me, the true harbinger of fall – which actually officially started last month – is the closing of the neighborhood ice cream emporiums (that sound you hear is me screaming in denial). In this era of the 24/7 economy, an enterprise that stays shuttered for one-third of the year might seem to make as much sense as owning a chain of phone booths. But as much as I hate the actuality of it, I do sort of appreciate the seasonal rhythm it represents. Sure, cabinets and sundaes are available at many local …

A few eager 12-year-olds arrive before dawn to make sure they are first in line.
After missing out on being the first customer at Hill-Top Creamery last March, Shane Benson was determined to do what it took to be first this year. What it took was getting to the ice cream stand at 5 a.m. Saturday morning. Actually, Shane arrived at 4:30 but when he realized his buddy Anthony Lee wasn’t there, he went to get him. “I was still asleep,” said Anthony. The two of them camped out from 5 on, joined at some point by friends Ben Wolf, and Quinton Mason. All four boys are 12 years old and attend Cole Middle School. With just minutes to go before noon Saturday, when Hill-Top was at last going to open for the day and for the season, there were about two dozen people waiting in line. On the other side of the windows, Hill-Top …

What to love and hate about living in East Greenwich this week.
RAVE: You have to love Herman Cain. And maybe you already do. East Greenwich, after all, is a traditionally elephantine town. But for me, it’s not political - though I think someone - who? - once said, everything is political…or was that everything is sacred? Or, everything is terrible? Or maybe, everything is illuminated? Anyway, back to Mr Cain. Why is he an East Greenwich topic? Well, if he becomes our next president - or even the Republican candidate in the election - then he concerns us. So this is why I love him: Here is a guy who has been experiencing the drip-drip-drip of sexual harassment charges as yet more and more women coming forward daily and him continuing to protest that “there’s not an ounce of truth to these accusations” …

Five things you need to know about East Greenwich today, August 10.
Summer days are counting down (sorry!). Here are a few ideas for how to occupy a few of them: Beach it, locally. Sandy Point is a lovely spot in Potowomut (technically not part of EG but shouldn’t it be?) at the end of Ives Road. In the old days, we’re told, there was a snack shop there and everything. These days, it’s just a strip of beach with a small parking lot, surrounded by houses. That small parking lot’s the catch. So, if you’re worried about finding an open spot, see if you can get dropped off there. Or you could ride bikes. This is the perfect place for those days you want beach time but can’t devote a whole day. Berry picking. You don’t have to go far to pick your own berries. This is a wonderful activity with or without …

What to love and hate about East Greenwich this week.
RANT: Can someone please explain to me the logic of Searle's Old Tyme Ice Cream hours? I love this place. Okay, I love ALL ice cream places. But when I have a yen for a strawberry cone with chocolate sprinkles and a pencil to write with, no other place in town will do. Searle’s supplies both of these must-have items. Plus they donate their proceeds to charity. So it’s all good. Except for their hours. I went there on Sunday early evening with a gaggle of kids but no luck. We headed to Hilltop. We returned on Monday afternoon. Success! Thursday, we did our detour to Hilltop again. Saturday, we struck gold – or strawberry. Since, as I wrote in a previous column, I also love Hilltop, I am not exactly suffering. And the extra walks help me …

I'd prefer to see more liquor licenses available. I think a craft beer bar on Main Street along the lines of Track 84 in Warwick or The Malted Barley in Westerly would be awesome. A brew pub somewhere in town would also be a fantastic addition, maybe even a nano-brewery or two, that poured growlers and had tasting rooms. Let's get with the times!   more ›
